Titans Softball Announces 2017 Schedule

DETROIT (12/6/16) – The University of Detroit Mercy softball program and head coach John Conway has announced the full schedule for the 2017 season. The Titans will play in four spring tournaments in addition to the Horizon League slate.

Detroit Mercy opens the season at the Total Control Sports Invitational, hosted by UIC in Rosemont, Ill., from Feb. 10-12. The Titans will face Butler, Eastern Illinois, Fort Wayne, Loyola and Western Illinois.

From there, the Titans head south to the Madeira Beach Invitational, hosted by Eastern Michigan, from Feb. 24-26. The Titans will square off against Stony Brook, Harvard, Army, Albany and EMU while in the Sunshine State.

Over spring break, the Titans head west to San Diego as they matchup against Brigham Young, San Diego, UC Davis, San Jose State and Oregon State from March 3-5.

The Titans stay in the Golden State to take on UC Riverside and San Diego on March 6 and 8, respectively, before returning to the Midwest for the Miami Invitational in Ohio from March 18-19. Detroit Mercy will square off against Dayton, Miami (OH) and Fort Wayne in their last non-conference tournament from the Buckeye State.

Detroit Mercy hosts Western Michigan on March 22 before beginning the Horizon League slate on March 24 at Wright State. The Titans' first conference home series will take place on April 7-8 against NKU.

During the home portion of the schedule, the Titans will welcome WMU, EMU, NKU, Oakland, Valparaiso and Youngstown State to Buysse Ballpark in 2017.

The Metro Series clash against rival Oakland is set for April 18-19.

Under the direction of head Coach Conway, the University of Detroit Mercy softball program continues to trend in the right direction. Since taking over prior to the 2015 season, the Titans have increased their win total each spring under Conway, capped off by the 2016 squad's 17 wins – a seven-win improvement from 2015 and the most wins in a season for the program since 2006. The 2015 and 2016 squads also posted back-to-back double-digit win seasons for the first time since the teams of 2007 and 2008.

The 2016 Titans recorded many noteworthy accomplishments last spring, including a four-game win streak for the first time since 2008 and a three-game shutout streak for the first time since 1992. The 2016 team also reached seven conference wins for the first time since 2002.

The 2016 team narrowly missed the Horizon League Tournament during the last week of the regular season, but returns many vital pieces for 2017 and adds a promising rookie class. With Conway at the helm, the Titans will be in position once again to push the program to heights it has not seen in a number of years.
