DETROIT (5/11/2016) -- The high-scoring Titans might just have made themselves a little more potent as University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball coach
Bacari Alexander '99 announced the signing of Mr. Basketball Finalist
Corey Allen (Ypsilanti, Mich. / Ypsilanti) to a National Letter of Intent.
Allen is the first Michigan Mr. Basketball Finalist to sign with the Titans out of high school since Ray McCallum in 2010. Research has also indicated that he is only the ninth Mr. Basketball Finalist to sign with Detroit Mercy straight out of high school.
"Corey is a fierce competitor who has led his high school teams in a variety of ways," said coach Alexander. "Having been coached by Steve Brooks, you can rest assured that he understands what hard work and dedication is. We are extremely excited about his renewed commitment to our future together at Detroit Mercy."
The 6-3, 210-pound guard led Ypsilanti to its third-straight Class A regional championship as well as a fourth-straight SEC White Division and Class A district title in 2016. In his four years, Ypsilanti was 79-15, including 22-2 as a senior, and won its conference in all four seasons.
Allen tallied 23.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 4.3 assists per game in his final prep year, while shooting 52 percent from the field, 48 percent from behind the arc and 86 percent at the free throw line. In his career he totaled over 1,500 points.
He earned a number of accolades including finishing fourth in the Mr. Basketball voting with 1,597 points this past season. Allen was also selected to the Detroit Free Press and Detroit News Dream Team and was MLive's Ann Arbor News' Player of the Year.
He was a four-time All-Conference honoree and was tabbed Class A Honorable Mention All-State by the Associated Press, Fifth Team All-State by the Detroit Free Press and All-Area by the Detroit News as a junior after posting 20.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists per game.
Allen was rated the No. 7 player in the state by Bank Hoops - as well as one of the top point guards - and Prep Hoops had him listed as the No. 9 player in Michigan.
