Titans Fall to Michigan in First College Basketball Game at LCA

DETROIT (12/16/2017) -- In the first collegiate basketball game played at the brand-new Little Caesars Arena on Saturday afternoon, the University of Detroit Mercy men's basketball team fell to a hot-shooting University of Michigan squad by a 90-58 margin.

Junior forward Kameron Chatman, going against his former team for the first time, notched his third double-double of the season with team-highs of 18 points and 13 rebounds. Sophomore guard Corey Allen added 11 points for the Titans (4-7).

It was the first match-up between the Titans and Michigan since 2014 and was a homecoming of sorts for Titan head coach Bacari Alexander '99, who served as an assistant at Michigan under U-M John Beilein for six seasons.

The Titans fell behind early, missing their first eight field goal attempts and Michigan made 9-of-15 3-point field goals in the first half to take a 54-19 halftime lead. Detroit Mercy played much better in the second half, out-scoring the Wolverines 39-36 in the second stanza.

Michigan shot 50 percent in the first half and 47.2 percent in the game, hitting 11 triples. The Titans shot 33.3 percent for the contest, but did shoot well at the free throw line, sinking 19-of-25 shots (76 percent). The Titans had 23 turnovers in the game.

  • The Wolverines would go on a 19-0 run later in the half to take a 40-13 lead, sinking several 3-pointers.
  • U-M would go 9-of-15 from beyond the arc in the first half, shooting 50 percent overall from the field and taking a 54-19 halftime lead.
  • The Titans shot just 21 percent in the opening 20 minutes and were led by Chatman's seven points.

Second Half
  • The Titans starting to find their offensive rhythm early in the second half with Chatman converting on a lay-up to open the second stanza.
  • Jermaine Jackson, Jr. then swished a long 3-pointer from the top of the key in the opening minute and just a minute later, Allen went 3-for-3 from the free throw line after he was fouled on a triple attempt. Detroit Mercy opened the second half on an 8-1 run.
  • Gerald Blackshear scored the next four points, first receiving a pass from McFolley which led to a wide-open lay-up and then later, Blackshear grabbed an offensive rebound over two Michigan players and put it back.
  • Chatman converted on a 3-pointer later in the half, just under the 8-minute mark in the second half.
  • Later with 6:29 remaining, Chatman put a good move on a Michigan defender, converted on the lay-up and made it a 3-point play after making the free throw.
  • Black scored the next four Titan points, on a lay-up and two free throws inside of four minutes left.
  • Jacob Joubert saw his first time in a Titan uniform in the final minute, tallying an assist on the final bucket on a Malik Eichler field goal.
  • The Titans shot 43 percent in the second half (12-of-28 from the floor).
