DETROIT (3/23/2017) -- It was another season to remember for the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team in 2016-17. The Titans went 9-0 at home during Horizon League play and reached the Horizon League Championship game for the first time since the 2011-12 season.
Under second-year head coach
Bernard Scott, the Titans clinched their second-straight winning season and made a run in the postseason, winning consecutive games against Cleveland State and Wright State to reach the title game in the Horizon League Championship. The Titans played in the final women's basketball game ever at Joe Louis Arena but ultimately fell just short of their NCAA Tournament goal, falling to top-seeded Green Bay in the championship game.
The Titans notched several big victories during the season, including defeating No. 21-ranked Green Bay at home, 76-72, on Feb. 4. It was at the end of a stretch when Detroit Mercy won seven of eight contests and also included wins over Milwaukee and Oakland inside Calihan Hall. The Titans defeated Oakland in both of their matchups this year, also defeating their Metro Series rivals on the road, 80-71, on Jan. 7. Detroit Mercy capped off the home slate in winning fashion, knocking off league-leader Wright State on Senior Night, 85-80.
Detroit Mercy went 18-14 overall and 12-6 in league play, finishing in sole possession of third place in the Horizon League. The Titans broke the school record for 3-pointers made (259) for the second-straight year, while also setting a new mark for defensive rebounds (943) and defensive rebounds per game (29.5). Detroit Mercy had its most blocks since the 1996-97 season with 130 rejections and had the second-best 3-point field goal defense mark all-time at 28.1 percent.
Seniors
Rosanna Reynolds and
Haleigh Ristovski each ended their Titan careers with strong seasons with Reynolds breaking the career assists record with 552 and moving into third in scoring (1,745 points) and Ristovski moving into the top-12 in rebounding, blocks and assists. The pair combined for 2,610 points, 1,503 rebounds, 888 assists, 296 steals, 305 3-pointers made and 232 game starts in their Titan careers.
Reynolds, along with junior
Brianne Cohen were each named All-Horizon League. It was the third-straight All-Conference honor for Reynolds, who with her First Team laurel, became just the second player in school history to be named three-time All-League. It was the first honor for Cohen, who was voted Second Team. Freshman guard
Anja Marinkovic also was voted to the Horizon League All-Freshman Team at year's end.
Detroit Mercy nearly set a new attendance record at Calihan Hall with 10,914 fans attending the 12 home games in 2016-17. It was the best single-season attendance mark since the 1985-86 season (11,865) and second-best mark for women's basketball all-time.
The squad was active in the community again and did well in the classroom which was evident from a 3.02 GPA during the fall semester with nine of 13 players earning their way onto the 2016-17 Athletic Director's Honor Roll for maintaining a 3.0 GPA or better.
