Detroit Mercy Prepares For Road Tilt At Siena

DETROIT (3/31/2017) -- After a quick start to the conference season, the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team will look to stay perfect in the MAAC as the Titans head to upstate New York to face the Siena Saints on Saturday, April 1.

Game time is slated for 1 p.m., and there will a live webstream, available for a nominal fee, and live stats.

Detroit Mercy went on the road last week and came away with an 8-6 victory over Quinnipiac to move to 2-0 in the MAAC for just the second time (2012). A win over the Saints would give the red, white and blue a 3-0 start in conference play for the first time in school history.

The Titans played some great defense causing a season-high 13 turnovers against the Bobcats and holding the defending league champions scoreless for nearly 36 minutes at one point.

Junior Charlie Hayes led the defensive effort registering a career-high five caused turnovers – tied for the most in Division I this season – while senior Jason Weber broke the school record with 13 saves and now has 622 in his career.

Detroit Mercy will return home next week, April 8, as the Titans host Jesuit and MAAC-rival Canisius at Noon.

AGAINST THE MAAC
Detroit Mercy is 23-23 in regular season league play since joining the MAAC in 2010.

The 2-0 start is tied with the 2012 squad for the best start in conference play in school history (2012 defeated Canisius on the road, 17-12, and Marist at home in overtime, 8-7) as the Titans look for their best ever start in MAAC play.

The Titans began their MAAC history with a 2-6 mark in 2010 and were 4-2 in 2011 and 2015.

Last year, Detroit Mercy was 2-4, including a one-goal loss to Siena and a four-goal differential at Canisius.

The Titans won the 2013 MAAC Championship as a No. 4 seed upsetting top-seeded Marist in the semifinals and No. 3 Siena in the title game.

LAST TIME OUT
Junior Charlie Hayes tallied a career-high five caused turnovers and senior Jason Weber made 13 saves as the Titan defense stifled defending MAAC champions Quinnipiac all game long in an 8-6 victory on the road.

Senior Kyle Beauregard, junior Adam Susalla and sophomore Matthew Vangalen each had two goals, while Hayes and freshman Seth Mendell added one apiece.

It was a scoreless contest until the 5:04 mark of the first when junior Sean Birney found Beauregard and he beat the keeper to give the Titans a 1-0 lead. Quinnipiac came back with a little over two minutes left and tied the game up and then took a 2-1 lead early in the second.

With the Titan defense keeping the Bobcats at bay, Detroit Mercy took control with six-straight goals leading 4-2 at the break and 7-2 with eight minutes to go in the game. The Titan defense held QU scoreless for nearly 36 minutes in taking that five-goal lead.

ABOUT SIENA
Siena currently stands at 0-9 overall and 0-1 in the MAAC, falling in its conference opener on the road at Monmouth last week, 17-9.

Despite the 0-9 record, the Saints have played a pretty tough schedule dropping games to nationally-ranked squads Syracuse and Virginia as well as some tough contests to Binghamton and Bryant.

ALL-TIME VS. SIENA
The teams have split the last four meetings, but Siena leads the all-time series, 6-3, in a matchup that has featured a number of close games.

Seven of the nine games have been decided by three goals or less, including five by one goal and two overtimes. In fact, the last four games have all been decided by one goal with two overtime contests.

Oddly enough, Detroit Mercy is 0-3 at home in the series, but 2-2 at Siena and 1-1 on a neutral field with both of those games coming at Canisius in the MAAC Championship.

622 & COUNTING
With his 13 saves, senior Jason Weber became the all-time leader at Detroit Mercy as he now has 622 in his career, passing the 609 mark set by A.J. Levell (2010-13).

He recorded a school-record 202 as a sophomore and also owns the second place mark with 179 as a freshman.

He is also fifth in school history with 140 ground balls.

THE GREAT WALL OF WEBER
Senior Jason Weber has now recorded double-digit saves in 39 of his 47 career games, including 17 with 15+, 11 with 17 or more and two with 20 or more.

In 47 career games – 46 starts – he has posted 622 saves, a .572 save percentage - second in school history - and a school record 10.10 goals against average.

He is coming off a game where he made 13 saves against a high-scoring Quinnipiac team.

In the season opener, he made 11 saves at RV/#17 Ohio State and posted a season-best 16 at Mercer. He had 12 on the road at RV/RV Marquette and 11 at RV/RV Air Force.

He is a two-time All-MAAC honoree who was the MAAC Defensive Player of the Year as a freshman.

As a sophomore, he topped the country for the second-straight year with 14.43 saves per game last season, while finishing third in the nation - and second in the MAAC - with a .589 save percentage, while as a rookie, he led the nation with a pair of school records finishing with 16.27 saves per game and a .642 save percentage.

HE LEADS EVERYONE
Senior Jason Weber leads all current NCAA Division I goalies with 622 saves and 13.23 saves per game.

The next highest on that list in total saves is Christian Carson-Banister of Boston University (550), while Tim Troutner of High Point is second in saves per game with 12.57.

VANTASTIC
Sophomore transfer Matthew Vangalen has had a great start to his Titan career and is currently on pace to set a school record for points in a single season.

He currently has 37 points through 10 games and at his current pace of 3.70 points per game, he would total roughly 55 points on the year, breaking the school mark of 49 (42g, 7a) held by Shayne Adams in 2014.

He posted his third hat trick of the year with a career-best four goals and career-tying five points against Manhattan.

In his first ever game wearing the red, white and blue, Vangalen posted two goals and three assists at RV/#17 Ohio State, the most ever by a Titan in their debut and the most ever by a Titan in a season opener.

At Robert Morris, he registered four assists to tie a school record that was held by current Director of Operations Alex Maini '15 (at VMI, Mar. 1, 2014) and Joel Matthews (at Quinnipiac, Mar 10, 2012).

Against Bellarmine, he tallied three goals and two assists against the Knights.

LEADING THE OFFENSE
Sophomore Matthew Vangalen currently leads the team with 37 points on 20 goals and 17 assists.

His 37 points currently tied for the most among all MAAC performers - just one away from 10th in school history - while his 17 assists are second and 20 goals rank fifth.

In the nation, he ranks 36th with 1.70 assists per game and 34th with 3.70 points per game - third in the league in both categories.

He is already tied for fourth in school history with 17 assists on the season, just three away from moving into third place.

The leader in single-season assists is Alex Maini, who recorded 26 in 2014.

DON'T MESS WITH TEX
Junior Will Kane - who hails from Dallas - already has a career-high 14 caused turnovers along with a career-best 19 ground balls.

He tied his career high with three caused turnovers against Manhattan and had two caused turnovers and three ground balls at Quinnipiac.

Kane had three ground balls against Bellarmine and three caused turnovers at Marquette at the Midwest Classic.

His 14 total caused turnovers leads the MAAC, while his 1.40 caused turnovers per game is third in the conference and 39th in the nation.

OFFENSE ON THE RISE
Detroit Mercy has netted double-digit goals four times this season after not accomplishing that at all last year.

Detroit Mercy tallied a season-high 14 goals in the win over Manhattan, the most goals for the Titans since a 14-13 victory at Siena in 2015.

In fact, the Titan offense has greatly improved from last season as they already have 93 goals on the year through 10 games after posting just 73 in 12 contests in 2016.

MAKE IT CLEAR
The Titans are third in the MAAC in clearing percentage at 85.6 percent on the season.

Detroit Mercy has had some great games with the clear going 15-of-16 at Ohio State, 21-of-22 against Mercer and 23-of-24 against Manhattan.

The 23 clears is tied for second in school history behind the 26-of-29 mark against Wagner in 2011.

KEEP SHOOTING
Detroit Mercy tallied 46 shots against Jacksonville.

The 46 shots were the most since recording 58 against Manhattan in 2015.

WINNING THE GROUND BALL BATTLE
The Titans won the battle of ground balls for the third time this season in convincing style as they held a 41-27 edge in GB's at Quinnipiac last week.

The 41 ground balls are tied for eighth in school history and were the most since the Titans scooped up 43 against Manhattan in 2012.

TAKING ADVANTAGE
Detroit Mercy is currently second in the MAAC with 14 man-up goals on the year, trailing only Siena's 15.

The Titans have a great history with the extra-man attack as they set a NCAA record with a .708 mark in 2014, converting on 34-of-48 opportunities.

GIVE IT TO ME
The Titans posted a season-high 13 caused turnovers in their win at Quinnipiac last week.

The 13 caused turnovers were the most since posting 13 against Manhattan in 2015.

Detroit Mercy is now third in the MAAC and 24th in the country with 6.90 caused turnovers per game.

ALREADY IN THE RECORD BOOKS
Freshman Seth Mendell recorded his first collegiate hat trick in a big way as he exploded for six goals in the win over Bellarmine on March 3.

The six goals are tied for the second-most in school history and the most since Shayne Adams had six at Marist in 2014.

PERFECT SHOOTING
Freshman Seth Mendell posted a season-best six goals against Bellarmine at the Midwest Classic, but even more impressive is that the six goals came on just six shots.

He is one of just two players in NCAA Division I with at least six goals on a perfect shooting percentage as Navy's David Little had nine goals on nine shots against Lehigh.

GO GET HIM CHUCK
Junior defensive midfielder Charlie Hayes recorded one of the best defensive games of the season in the road win at Quinnipiac.

Hayes tallied a career-high five caused turnovers, tied his career high picking up a game-best five ground balls and even scored a goal in the win over the Bobcats, all while holding Quinnipiac's second-leading goal scorer Foster Cuomo – the Co-MAAC Preseason Player of the Year - off the stat sheet.

The five caused turnovers were the most since Paul Bitetti had five against Bellarmine in 2014, and just two away from the school record.

He is also tied with nine others for the most in NCAA Division I this season.

He is now seventh in school history with 23 caused turnovers as he has a career-best 12 on the year, ranking fifth in the MAAC and 58th in the nation with 1.2 caused turnovers per game.

LEAVE IT TO THE LSM
Freshman long-stick midfielder Alex Akins was inserted into the starting line-up six games ago and his play has picked up considerably.

He is coming off a great game where he had a caused turnover and two ground balls, but more importantly, he was the primary defender on Quinnipiac's leading goal scorer Brian Feldman – who came into the game with 21 goals and 23 points – holding him to just one goal which came with the Titans up 8-3 with four minutes left.

At Robert Morris, he recorded a season-high two caused turnovers with two GB's.

SUSALLA COMES UP BIG
Junior Adam Susalla fired in a career-high two goals in the win over Quinnipiac last week.

He now has four goals and seven points in his career, and three of his four goals have come against the Bobcats.

BACK-TO-BACK TALLIES
Junior Charlie Hayes is one of the best defensive midfielders in the game, but he has shown his offensive skills coming up with goals in the last two games against Manhattan and Quinnipiac.

Prior to the Manhattan game, Hayes had one career marker - last year against Siena - in his first 22 career games.

WALSH CONTRIBUTING
Sophomore Patrick Walsh was held off the stat sheet in the season opener at RV/No. 17 Ohio State, but since then, he has tallied five goals and six assists.

The five goals, six assists and 11 points are all career highs, and he posted a career-best two goals at Robert Morris.

BIRNEY BOMBS
Junior Sean Birney has already surpassed his career best with 12 goals this season.

He is now tied for second on the team with 12 goals and 16 points.

He is also tied for fifth in the nation and third in the MAAC with five man-up goals.

GJOKAJ TIES HIS MARK
Senior Ben Gjokaj tied his career high with 15 faceoff wins and picked up a career-best 10 ground balls at RV/#17 Ohio State in the season opener.

The 10 GB's are tied for the second-most in school history and are the most since Jordan Houtby had 10 against Michigan in 2012, while his 15 faceoff wins were just one behind the school record of 16 recorded twice by Brandon Davenport vs. Robert Morris in 2010 and 2011.

After going 10-of-18 against Manhattan, he is now 63-of-136 (46.3%) on the season with 28 ground balls.

He tied his mark that he set going 15-of-22 on faceoffs against Quinnipiac last year.

Last season, he saw action in 11 games as the Titans' main faceoff specialist and led the league and was 24th in the nation in faceoff winning percentage with a career-high and school record 56.6 percent (74-of-133), which included an astounding 68-of-108 (62.9%) mark in MAAC play

ALEX THE GREAT
Freshman Alex Jarzembowski won a season-best 14-of-21 faceoffs and scooped up a game-high seven ground balls at Robert Morris.

He had another fine outing winning 12-of-18 against Bellarmine with five ground balls and was 8-of-13 with four GB's at Quinnipiac.

On the season, he is 44-of-73 (60.3%) with 20 ground balls, including 41-of-65 (63.0%) with 18 GB's in the last six games.

BO SETTING CAREER MARKS
Senior Kyle Beauregard has had a great start to his final collegiate campaign as he is tied for second on the team with 16 points and 12 goals.

The 16 points and 12 goals are both new career highs.

LOOKING FOR MORE
Junior Alec Gilhooly is already approaching his career high of 18 points last year as he has 10 goals and four assists on the season.

Gilhooly has notched two goals in a game three times this season registering a pair at RV/#17 Ohio State, against Mercer and against Jacksonville.
