Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Titans Edged By Jesuit-Rival Marquette

MILWAUKEE (3/5/2017) -- Senior Jason Weber made 12 saves and junior Pat Masterson scored his first collegiate goal, but a late Titan run was not enough as the University of Detroit Mercy men's lacrosse team was edged, 8-6, at RV/RV Marquette on Sunday in the final game of the Midwest Classic.

Sophomore Matthew Vangalen led the offense with three points on two assists and a goal. Junior Sean Birney netted two goals and freshman Donavon Dempsey registered a goal and an assist.

Detroit Mercy (2-5) was down 8-4 in the fourth, but was able to put the heat on Marquette (2-2) scoring two goals to pull within two. First Vangalen found sophomore Patrick Walsh and he beat the keeper with a line drive shot to the upper right corner with 7:18 left.

Then off a turnover, sophomore Emmett Green located Masterson and the long stick midfielder fired one in for his first collegiate goal on just the second shot of his career with 2:23 remaining.

Junior Will Kane had a career and game-high three caused turnovers. Weber picked up a game-high five ground balls and Dempsey added two GB's.

The Titans were 13-of-15 on clears and held Marquette to 2-of-6 with the extra-man advantage.

Marquette struck first less than a minute into the game, but Detroit Mercy came right back as freshman Seth Mendell created a scoring opportunity and found Vangalen who tied it at 1-1 with 12:12 left in the first.

The Golden Eagles took a 3-1 midway through the first, but the Titans were able to knot it at 3-3. Birney beat the goalie at the 5:12 mark and then Vangalen set up Dempsey and the rookie did the rest burying it in the net to tie it up with 3:28 left in the period.

Marquette once again took the lead, 4-3, late in the first but Dempsey fed Birney and he knocked it through for a 4-4 contest early in the second.

The Golden Eagles then jumped out on top with four-straight markers until midway through the fourth.

The Titans split the Midwest Classic for the second time in three years as Detroit Mercy opened the event beating Bellarmine on Friday, 13-10.

The Titans will get a few days of practice before heading back out on the road on Saturday, March 11, as the red, white and blue travel to Colorado to take on the Air Force Academy. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. (EST).
