Another Highly Successful Camp for Special Needs Players Rocks Calihan Hall

DETROIT (6/29/2017) -- Seven years ago, the Titan Athletic Club started a tradition that has continued to grow in the Annual Basketball Camp for Special Needs Players.

2017 marked the seventh year of the event, which was co-hosted with Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan.

"Seven years ago, we had a little idea. Pat Martino and his son, who has special needs, said look there is no basketball camp or any kind of camp that is available for athletes like these," said former Titan basketball standout and Titan Club member Bernie Fuhs '03. "It started out as a little idea at an alumni board meeting and seven years later, we still make it happen."

Over 30 special needs athletes came to historic Calihan Hall for the event, which is for ages 12 and older, to help them learn and develop fundamental basketball skills while working with Titan Athletic Club members, Titan coaches, players and alumni.

The clinic put all participants through various drills before ending with a scrimmage. All participants also took home a camp t-shirt.

The Titan Athletic Club is the official booster organization for the more than 300 student-athletes at the University of Detroit Mercy. Formed back in 1940s, the Titan Athletic Club and the more exclusive CAL Club designations recognize alumni, parents, former student-athletes and friends of Detroit Mercy Athletics who have banded together to provide financial support for the University's 19 intercollegiate athletic programs.

The Titan Club and the University of Detroit Mercy Department of Athletics would like to thank all those that came out to today's camp and to be on the look out for more special needs events throughout the year hosted by Titan athletics.
