Brianne Cohen (Toronto, Ont. / York Memorial) was presented with the Team MVP award Sunday with the University of Detroit Mercy women's basketball team holding its annual year-end banquet at Pasquale's in Royal Oak. Third-year head coach
Bernard Scott passed out several individual awards during the ceremony Sunday afternoon, including the MVP honor to Cohen.
A four-year player for the Titans, Cohen was All-Horizon League as junior as well as the Sixth Player of the Year as a sophomore during coach Scott's first year with Detroit Mercy. She finished her career No. 7 in career scoring (1,438 points) and No. 2 in field goal percentage (55.0), leading the team in scoring this season and twice during her Titan career. A captain for the team, Cohen scored in double figures 70 times during her Titan career, including 23 as a senior.
Receiving the Academic Award was senior guard
Nicole Urbanick (Grosse Ile, Mich. / Divine Child), who was named to the 2017-18 five-member women's basketball Horizon League All-Academic Team. Urbanick holds a 3.71 GPA in Biochemistry and is enrolled in the seven-year Dental program. A four-year letter winner for the Titans, Urbanick set a new school record in career 3-pointers made (242) and became the 22nd player to score 1,000 career points.
Sophomores
Ashley Miller (Toledo, Ohio / Jesup Wakeman Scott) and
Zoey Oatis (Detroit, Mich. / Cass Technical) shared the team's Most Improved honor. Miller started 16 of 18 league games during the season, playing all 30 games. Miller led the team in blocked shots with 25 and ranked second in offensive boards (40), while ranking fourth overall in rebounds per game (3.8). She had seven games of multiple blocks, including a season-high five at Oakland on Jan. 27.
Oatis played 29 games this season, ranking sixth on the squad in scoring (5.1 points per game). She led the team in field goal percentage (48.7 percent). Oatis led the squad in steals (30) and ranked fifth on the team in blocks (13). In her first league game this season at Youngstown State, Oatis scored a career-high 22 points, going 8-for-8 from the floor and pulling down a season-best seven caroms.
Freshman forward
Lexey Tobel (Hartland, Mich.), who earned All-Horizon League Freshman Team honors, earned the team's Sixth Player of the Year accolade after coming off the bench during the majority of the league season. Tobel, who came off the bench 15 times, led all Horizon League freshmen in 3-pointers made (44) following the regular season and ranked fifth among HL freshmen in scoring at 8.0 points per game. She was second on the team in rebounding (4.1 boards per game) and third in both scoring (8.0 points per contest) and triples made (45).
