SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (4/14/18) – The University of Detroit Mercy women's tennis team suffered a 5-2 defeat to rival Oakland on Saturday night from Franklin Athletic Club.
The short-handed Titans gave the Golden Grizzlies a tough match, but would come up short while playing with just five players.
Chelsea Apawti and
Jasmine Apawti got things started with a strong 6-2 win at No. 1 doubles, but an automatic win at No. 3 and a 6-2 edge at No. 2 would give the visitors the doubles point and an early 1-0 lead.
The Golden Grizzlies took a 3-0 lead with a win at the top singles court and a point at No. 6, but C. Apawti cut the lead with a 6-0, 3-6 and 6-2 win at No. 5.
Needing all three remaining matches, the Titans fought back in tough matches at Nos. 2-4. Both matches at Nos. 3 and 4 went to extra sets, but Oakland clinched the win with a grueling 7-6, 7-5 win at No. 2.
Ksenia Providokhina came out on top at No. 4, earning a 6-3 win in the opening set before needing a 6-2 win in the third for the point.
The final match would go Oakland's way as Alexandra Whall outlasted
Pauline Van Herck in three sets.
The Golden Grizzlies improve to 10-10 overall and 4-3 in Horizon League play with the win, while Detroit Mercy falls to 7-15 overall and 2-5 in conference action.
The Titans will look to bounce back as the regular season comes to a close next weekend. Detroit Mercy will head to Northern Kentucky on Saturday, Apr. 21, before the regular season finale at Wright State on Sunday, Apr. 22.
