DETROIT (5/10/2018) -- The University of Detroit Mercy basketball program lost one of its own as former student-athlete and long-time donor Frank Dulapa '41 entered eternal life on Monday, May 7. Dulapa was 99 years old.
Dulapa - nicknamed "Long Shot Dulapa" and "Duke" - played four years of basketball at U-D from 1937-1941 earning three varsity letters after starring on the freshman team. He was coached by the legendary Lloyd Brazil and played alongside Titan great and All-American Bob Calihan, and the two became great friends.
The son of Polish immigrants, he was born on October 6, 1918, in Flint, Michigan, the son of the late Edward and Veronica.
He graduated from Hamtramck High School and earned a scholarship to the University, graduating in 1941 with a Bachelors Degree in Accounting.
Dulapa also served his country enlisting in the United States Navy during World War II and was sent to Japan. After the war was over, he returned home and worked in the insurance business and married his wife in, Patricia Allen, in 1950. He then went on to work with London United Investments overseeing their U.S. operations.
He had five children, 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
Dulapa was the beloved husband of 60 years to the late Marion "Pat". Dearest father of Judy (Bob) Kiessel, Tim Dulapa, Mary Pat (Rick) Benton, Tom (Sheila) Dulapa and Michael (Dana) Dulapa. Loving grandfather of Jennifer (Eric) Marsman, Elizabeth (Mark) Zimmerman, Christina (Joe) Potkay, Angela Kiessel, Mark Benton, Jaclyn (Kurt) Ryder, Zachary Benton, Tommy Dulapa, Sarah (Ryan) Chandonnet, Danny Dulapa, Molly Dulapa, Patrick Dulapa, Brian Dulapa, Darcy Dulapa, Kiley Dulapa, and great-grandfather of Victoria, Fiona and Gabriel Marsman, Luke and Max Zimmerman, Abigail and Viola Potkay, Lena and Elden Ryder and Cameron Chandonnet.
Visitation for Dulapa will be held Thursday, May 10 from 3-9 p.m., with a 7 p.m. Rosary Service, at the D.S. Temrowski & Sons Funeral Home, 30009 Hoover Road at Common (12 1/2 Mile Rd.) in Warren.
He will lie in state on Friday, May 11 from 9 a.m. until the time of his Funeral Mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. Martin De Porres Catholic Church, 31555 Hoover Road in Warren.
Following Mass, Dulapa will join his beloved Patricia as he is laid to rest, with Military Honors, at Resurrection Cemetery, 18201 Clinton River Road in Clinton Township, Mich.
