DETROIT (5/29/2018) -- It was yet another banner academic school year for the University of Detroit Mercy Department of Athletics with 17 of 19 programs posting a 3.0 GPA or better during 2017-18 and the department collectively posting a 3.34 GPA overall.
It's the second-straight school year that the department has earned a 3.30 GPA or better. The Titans had 62 student-athletes take part during the May graduation.
"I am continually amazed by how impressive our student-athletes are," Athletics Academic Coordinator
Melinda Konya said. "Whether through teamwork that you see on the field, court, or in classrooms, our student-athletes are working together every day to reach new levels of achievement, and academics in particular, are unprecedented."
All 10 women's athletic programs had GPAs better than 3.25 on the school year and seven of the nine Titan men's programs were above 3.0 GPAs for the 2017-18 school year. Women's golf sported the top GPA with a 3.72 GPA, while men's soccer led all men's squads in the department with a 3.51 GPA this past academic year.
Other standouts were softball with a 3.48 GPA overall and a department-best 3.73 during the spring term, women's track and field and cross country with a collective 3.55 GPA, women's tennis at 3.54 GPA, women's fencing with a 3.53 GPA and women's lacrosse sporting a 3.49 GPA for the department.
Men's fencing (3.44 GPA), men's golf (3.30 GPA) and men's lacrosse (3.28 GPA) were other standouts on the men's side, while women's basketball earned a 3.34 GPA and women's soccer was just behind with a 3.27 GPA.
During the spring semester alone, 74-percent of student-athletes earned a 3.0 GPA or better and eight of the 19 squads had GPAs above a 3.40.
