DETROIT, MI. (5/29/18) -- University of Detroit Mercy track and field senior
Ben Kendell was named to the 2018 Google Cloud Academic All-District M/W Track & Field/Cross Country Team, selected by CoSIDA, on Tuesday afternoon.
Kendell, a senior from nearby Huntington Woods, Mich. just finished his season by competing in the NCAA Championship Preliminary Round for the 10,000m down in Tampa, Fla.
He placed 20th in the 10,000m, missing top-12 qualification by a mere 30 seconds, but has a red-shirt season next year that he will be utilizing while trying to qualify for the NCAA Championships.
Kendell was tabbed the team MVP and was honored as the Winter Horizon League Male Scholar-Athlete of the Season for his outstanding athletic and academic accolades.
Kendell carries a 3.93 GPA while participating in the school's demanding five-year electrical engineering program.
This season, he set a school record in the 10,000-meters after claiming a time of 29:24.87 at the Stanford Invitational. That time was good enough to earn him #1 all-time at Detroit Mercy.
He also received the Father Norbert Huetter Award, which is handed out annually to a male and female student-athlete who sets an example for others by their display of attitude, dedication and leadership.
This is his second time receiving CoSIDA Academic honors, after being named CoSIDA Academic All-America Third Team last season.
