AURORA, Ohio (10/1/2013) --
The University of Detroit Mercy men¹s golf team did its best to stay on top, but just could not hang on to second place as the Titans tied for third at the Cleveland State Invitational, played at the Par 72, 7,049-yard Barrington Country Club.

"Overall, I think it was a good tournament for us," said UDM head coach Mark Engel. "We beat a lot of good teams and we were playing well today, but we just made some mistakes on the back nine and we let some teams catch up."

The Titans - who were in second place after the first 36 holes - shot a 304 on Tuesday to share third with an 869 (282-283-304) total, just six shots out of the runner-up spot. UDM began the event yesterday with a pair of rounds that ranked in the top 15 in school history and the 869 total is now 11th on the all-time list.

Senior Brendan Leonard led Detroit on the final 18 with a 1-under 71 to tie for ninth with a 214 (70-73-71). The 214 ties his career low for the third time in his career, while he also finished in the top 10 for the seventh time.

He led the team with 38 pars, ¬ the second most in the field, ¬ and also tallied 10 birdies, good for second on the squad.

Sophomore Aaron Knutson also tied for ninth with a career-best 214 (70-67-77), 20 strokes better than his previous career low. Knutson topped the team with 14 birdies and was second among the players with an 8-under, 4.33 average on the course¹s Par 5¹s.

"Hats off to Aaron for what he did here," said Coach Engel. "He has been battling for a spot in the line-up and it was a great tournament for him and all the hard work he has put in."

Sophomore Wil Wittmann shared 15th place with a 216 (67-71-78), his fifth career top-20 finish. Wittmann had 35 pars in the 54-hole event and was top 10 in both Par 3 (+1, 3.08) and Par 4 (-3, 3.90) scoring average.

Freshman Kyle Gaines tied for 47th carding a 229 (79-72-78), while freshman Spencer Lendzion posted a season-low 231 (77-78-76) for 52nd. Rounding out the Titan unit was sophomore Josh Shaw who totaled a 234 (75-76-83) for a share of 62nd place.

Detroit will finish its fall schedule next week, Oct. 7-8, when UDM heads to Hebron, Ky., to compete in Cincinnati's Bearcat Invitational.
