ANN ARBOR, Mich. (9/17/2013) -- Senior
Brendan Leonard might have had a hiccup in the early part of the second round yesterday, but he was back to his old self on Tuesday with an even-par 71 as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team finished up play at the Wolverine Intercollegiate.
"This course was very tough and it made you pay if you missed a fairway or green," said head coach Mark Engel. "The biggest thing is that we improved from round to round and playing at a course and tournament like this will only help us."
Leonard ended the event with a 220 (70-79-71) tying for 28th place with freshman teammate
Kyle Gaines. Leonard – who totaled a 226 at Michigan's tournament as a sophomore – started the event with a 1-under 70 yesterday, which included six birdies, and then opened today's final round with three more in the first seven holes. He would go on to make eight-straight pars and finished the 54-hole tournament leading the team with 10 birdies.
"Lenny played well and he even had a few more opportunities for birdies that didn't fall for him," added Coach Engel.
Gaines was right there with his elder teammate as he recorded his second-straight 2-over 73 on the final 18 for his 220 (74-73-73) scorecard, lowering his total by seven strokes from his collegiate debut two weeks ago. The rookie tapped in seven pars in his first nine holes and then birdied hole one and hole four before finishing with five more pars. In the event, he posted eight birdies and 34 pars - second on the team in both categories - and tied for third in the field in Par 3 scoring (Even, 3.00).
Sophomore
Wil Wittmann once again turned in another solid round ending with a 2-over 73 for a 223 (78-72-73), tying for 43rd place. Wittmann began the tournament with a 7-over 78 in round one, but he quickly put that behind him with two birdies to open round two and then two more today to go with 12 pars. The 2013 Horizon League Newcomer of the Year would end up leading Detroit with 35 total pars, while knocking in five birdies.
"Kyle was very good for us throughout this tournament and Wil started slow, but he picked it up and played well today," said Coach Engel.
Sophomore
Aaron Knutson and freshman
Spencer Lendzion both tallied a 77 in round three as Knutson tied for 54th with a career-low 234, while Lendzion shared 57th with a 239.
As a team, Detroit once again lowered its total as the tournament went on finishing with a 294 today and an 896 (305-297-294) overall, good for 10th place. The Titan also did not post one score outside of the 70's in round two and three.
"We did a lot of good things and now we just need to continue to improve," said Coach Engel. "Aaron and Spencer gave us some good scores in the last two rounds and we just need to keep working hard to get better."
UDM will have almost two weeks of practice before teeing off again at the Cleveland State Invitational, held at the Barrington Golf Club in Aurora, Ohio, from Sept. 30-Oct. 1.
