Sparks Earns Top 20 At Horizon League Championship

HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. (4/24/2018) -- Sophomore Scott Sparks led the Titans finishing in the top 20 as the University of Detroit Mercy men's golf team ended play at the Horizon League Championship on Tuesday.

Detroit Mercy placed eighth with a 948 (318-310-320) at the par 71, 6,868-yard El Campeon Course at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-In-The-Hills, Florida.

Sparks and redshirt freshman Jonathan Brillati tallied the low rounds for the Titans on the day as each carded a 77 with Sparks putting in a pair of birdies and Brillati registering 13 pars. 

Sparks led Detroit Mercy overall taking 17th with a 231 (79-75-77) as he ended his final round with two birdies and nine pars.

Senior Eric Macrow and sophomore Zack Tenerowicz tied for 30th with a 243, while senior Devan Schulert claimed 33rd with a 246.

The event was the last tournament for the Titan two seniors in Macrow and Schulert.

Here is a recap of the action at the Horizon League Championship:
  • Detroit Mercy was fifth in the event with 145 pars
  • Sparks and Brillati led the team and were tied for eighth in the field with 32 pars
  • Sparks knocked in a team-best two birdies in the tournament and tied for the seventh best mark on the course's par 3's with a +1, 3.08 average
  • Sparks is now 12th in school history with a 75.83 average in 53 rounds
  • Macrow ended his career 15th in school history with a 76.64 average in 86 rounds out on the links
  • Macrow ended his career with 10 top-20 marks and five top-10 efforts
  • Schulert finished his career with a 78.98 average in 46 rounds out on the course

  • "Tough end to the year and obviously not the way we wanted to finish the season. Injuries and bad breaks throughout the season left us battling most of the year, but I'm proud of these guys, and we'll be stronger and better for it next year."

  • "For those returning, we know as a group what needs to be done to get better, and we will work hard this summer to come back ready."
