Men's Soccer Defeats Western Michigan, 3-1

The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team snapped its losing steak Sunday afternoon as the Titans clinched a 3-1 victory over Western Michigan University at the WMU Soccer Complex in Kalamazoo, MI. UDM improved to 3-9-1 overall, while the Broncos fell to 3-11-1 on the year.

The Broncos got on the scoreboard first as junior Shaun Clements took a penalty kick at the 14:11 mark and was able to slide the ball by UDM junior netminder #Bryan Kloss# (Fraser, MI/Bishop Foley).

Just over a minute later, the Titans responded to even the score as sophomore #Jake Munchiando# (Troy, MI/Troy Athens) took a free kick to the right of the net. It then bounced off a defender, but Detroit senior #Renato Susnja# (Dearborn, MI/Edsel Ford) was there for the rebound and put it into the net for his third goal of the season.

In the opening minutes of the second half, senior #Simon Zahra# (New South Wales, Sydney, Australia/Evans) took a corner kick from the right side. Junior Nick Dreshaj (Clinton Twp., MI/Chippewa Valley) was there to receive it and took a hard shot, which ended up hitting the post on the right side. Freshman Adam Philp (Windsor, ON/St. Joseph's Catholic) was in front of the net and shot the rebound past WMU sophomore goalkeeper A.J. Reed for his first collegiate goal and the eventual game-winner for the Titans.

The Titans tacked on a security goal in the 69th minute, as Zahra took another corner kick from the left side. Susnja then fed the ball from the right of the net and sophomore #Ken Simon# (Brighton, MI/Brighton) received the ball and shot it into the center of the net to give the Titans a 3-1 advantage over WMU.

Kloss tallied two saves on the afternoon and allowed one goal, while Reed collected five saves in 90 minutes of action and he allowed three goals.

Detroit outshot the Broncos, 23-9, and UDM also had a 10-3 advantage on corner kicks.

The Titans will continue non-conference action as Detroit will host IPFW on Oct. 22 at 4 p.m.
