Detroit Mercy NCAA Compliance


Amy Gasahl rejoined Titan athletics in January of 2022 as the Director of Student-Athlete Services and was promoted to the Director of NCAA Compliance in June of 2025. She had previously worked at Detroit Mercy from 2006-2015 with softball, compliance and academics. 

She was the Assistant Director of NCAA Compliance/Academic Coordinator from 2006-2014 before being promoted to Director of Athletic Academics, Student Athlete Welfare & Eligibility in the summer of 2014. Her Detroit Mercy career began as an athletic administrative intern/volunteer assistant softball coach during the 2006-07 season.

In her past positions, Gasahl oversaw all of the Titans' academics, student welfare and eligibility. In addition, she served as the Student Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC) advisor, the CHAMPS Life Skills Coordinator and also spearheaded all of the community service outreach for the student athletes. She was also a sports supervisor for softball and men's and women's tennis. 

Gasahl graduated from Hillsdale College in 2005 with a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and went on to receive her master's degree in sport administration from Bowling Green State University in 2006 and her MBA from Detroit Mercy in 2013. While at Hillsdale, she was a four-year starter for the Chargers softball squad.

The University of Detroit Mercy compliance office directs this effort and acts a primary resource concerning NCAA rules, regulations and compliance issues. We ensure that our institution complies with all NCAA standards and we are responsible for monitoring all athletic programs to assure compliance.

Q & A To A Few Routine Issues

What do I do if I have a question about my student financial aid account?  
  • Whether or not you are receiving athletic aid, all questions regarding your financial aid account should be directed to the Financial Aid Office.
  • If there is an issue with the application of your athletic scholarship, you can then set up an appointment with the compliance office to resolve the issue.
  • Be sure to check your account on a regular basis to catch any discrepancies.
 
Who do I talk to regarding my eligibility?
  • All student-athletes must adhere to, and meet, NCAA guidelines to compete in NCAA competition.  
  • All questions concerning eligibility should be directed to Amy Gasahl, or Betsey Walkowiak.
  • Academic eligibility is based on GPA, credits earned and the number of semesters you have completed.

Academic Eligibility Requirements
Prior to the Second Year of Enrollment: 
Each Fall and Winter Academic Term a minimum of 6 semester hours of credit earned
Regular Academic Year (Fall and Winter) must equal a minimum of 18 semester hours of credit earned   
Full Year (Fall, Winter and Summer combined): must equal a minimum of 24 semester hours of credit earned
Credits earned toward any degree offered at the institution
90-percent of the minimum GPA required for graduation (1.8) however, Detroit Mercy requires at least a 2.0 to remain in good academic standing
 
Prior to the Third Year of Enrollment: 
Each Fall and Winter Academic Term: minimum of 6 semester hours of credit earned
Each Fall and Winter Academic Term a minimum of 6 semester hours of credit earned
Regular Academic Year (Fall and Winter) must equal a minimum of 18 semester hours of credits earned
Major must be declared
Annual/Percentage-of-Degree: minimum of 40-percent of the designated degree must be completed     
Credits used for eligibility must go toward the designated degree
95-percent of the minimum GPA required for graduation (1.9) however, Detroit Mercy requires at least a 2.0 to remain in good academic standing
 
Prior to the Fourth Year of Enrollment:
Each Fall and Winter Academic Term a minimum of 6 semester hours of credit earned
Regular Academic Year (Fall and Winter) must equal a minimum of 18 semester hours of credits earned
Annual/Percentage-of-Degree: minimum of 60-percent of the designated degree must be completed     
Credits used for eligibility must go toward the designated degree
100-percent of the minimum GPA required for graduation (2.0)
 
Prior to the Fifth Year of Enrollment:
Each Fall and Winter Academic Term a minimum of 6 semester hours of credit earned
Regular Academic Year (Fall and Winter) must equal a minimum of 18 semester hours of credits earned
Annual/Percentage-of-Degree: minimum of 80-percent of the designated degree must be completed     
Credits used for eligibility must go toward the designated degree
100-percent of the minimum GPA required for graduation (2.0)
 
Does my athletic aid cover summer coursework?
  • Athletic scholarships apply to academic year standard terms and do not transfer to summer coursework.  
  • You can apply for summer aid through the academic center during the winter term.
 
Who do I talk to about transferring or withdrawing from an athletic team?
  • Student-athletes wishing to transfer or withdraw from an athletic team should consult with their respective coach and Amy Gasahl
 
What do I do if there is a hold on my account?
  • To determine if you have a hold on your account, review your myPortal front page.  
  • The holds are located in the top right corner and will indicate the type of hold on your account.  
  • Student-athletes with a hold on their account should contact their advisor for academic/advising holds and the office of student accounting for any financial holds.  
  • If the cause of the hold is related to athletic aid, student-athletes should then reach out to Amy Gasahl
