At the University of Detroit Mercy, the sports medicine staff is committed to providing the best care to all Titan athletes. Associate Athletic Director for Sports Medicine Mike Miller coordinates and oversees the sports medicine services at Detroit Mercy for over 250 student-athletes.

The sports medicine staff is responsible for assessing athletic injuries and illnesses, administering first aid and CPR care, making medical referrals, and preventing and rehabilitating athletic injuries that occur during the school year.

The sports medicine department is under the guidance of Dr. Michael Workings, a family practice physician from the Henry Ford Health System. Dr. Workings also acts as the Team Physician for the Detroit Tigers. Detroit's team Orthopedic is Dr. Brian K. Rill, while Dr. Reginald Jewell serves as the athletic department's team Dentist.

The athletic training facility is located at Calihan Hall. This training facility is equipped with a taping and first aid station, treatment and modality tables, hydrotherapy whirlpools, and rehabilitative equipment.

The goals of the University of Detroit Mercy Sports Medicine Department is to prevent athletic injuries as much as possible through effective injury prevention programs, and to return injured athletes to their previous competitive status in the safest and quickest manner possible.

Q & A To A Few Routine Issues

What are the hours of operation for Sports Medicine?
  • The sports medicine department has hours of operations from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm for student-athletes or by appointment only.
  • For team workouts and practices, we are open for the student-athletes 1 hour prior for all their sports medicine needs.
  • Please consult your Athletic Trainer for any special needs.
 
What do I do if I become ill or have an injury?
  • We recommend you contact your designated Athletic Trainer, as we make ourselves available to the student-athlete at any time.
  • We will assist you with appropriate accommodation as well as contact our physicians for further recommendations.
 
What if I need to go to an urgent care or hospital?
  • Make sure you bring all medical documentation with you and immediately contact your designated Athletic Trainer.
  • We are required to have our team physician review all medical care and coordinate efforts for a safe return to Athletics.
 
Can I see my own physician?
  • Yes you can, however, please coordinate this with your designated Athletic Trainer.
  • We require all documentation to be presented to the Sports Medicine staff and final review by our team physician is required prior to returning to Athletics.
 
Am I required to have medical insurance?
  • You are required to carry a primary insurance either through your parents, an independent insurance agency or through the Wellness Center’s Health Clinic.  
  • The Athletic Department carries a secondary insurance that covers athletically related injuries sustained during sponsored events.
  • Annually, you receive paperwork that explains the procedure and this is discussed during your beginning of the year meeting.

Can I see a doctor on campus or are there medical services available?
  • Yes! The Sports Medicine department offers physician clinic hours 1-2 times per week in the Athletic Training room.
  • The Wellness Center (located in the West Quad) has Monday - Friday hours and is staffed by a Nurse Practitioner.  
  • They also provide personal and Mental Health Counseling. 
 
What if my designated Athletic Trainer is not available or I do not know who to speak to?
  • Please come to the Sports Medicine department and introduce yourself to any staff member or ask to speak to Michael Miller.
  • All staff are available to treat and work with our student-athletes and will assist to coordinate your care effectively and efficiently.
