The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to visiting Butler in a Horizon League match-up at Titan Field on Halloween afternoon. UDM falls to 4-11-1 overall (1-5-1 HL), while Butler improves to 13-2-3 on the year (5-0-2).
In the 61st minute, UDM junior Nick Dreshaj (Clinton Twp., MI/Tiffin) pushed the ball up the field and sent a long pass to freshman Adam Philp (Windsor, ON/St. Joseph's Catholic). Philp then slotted it through to freshman Sam Seppo (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron,) who was waiting at the 18-yard line, and he then took a hard shot which went into the high left post to put the score at 1-0 in favor of the Titans.
The Bulldogs responded about two and a half minutes later as senior Eduardo Garcia passed it in from the 18-yard line to sophomore Brett Heinz. He crossed it to senior Frank Patano, who was unmarked inside the box. Patano beat UDM junior goalkeeper Bryan Kloss (Fraser, MI/Bishop Foley Catholic) after taking a hard low shot to the left corner of the net.
In the 82nd minute, Garcia took a lose ball in the box and shot it at point blank range. Kloss made one of his three saves of the game, but the rebound ended up on the foot of Patano, who put the loose ball into the back of the net for the game-winning goal for BU.
Pattano added his second goal of the game at the 83:47 mark and Garcia earned his third assist of the afternoon.
Junior Nick Hegeman tallied two saves for the Bulldogs, while allowing one goal in 90 minutes of play.
Detroit was edged out slightly on goals by BU, 17-14, but the Titans did have a 6-3 advantage in corner kicks.
The Titans will wrap up regular-season conference play on the road as UDM will face Valparaiso in Indiana on Sunday at 2 p.m.
