The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team faced the University of Michigan at Titan Field on Detroit's campus for the Titans' home season opener Friday evening, but UDM fell to the Wolverines by a score of 5-1. With the loss, Detroit now stands at 0-5-0 on the year, while Michigan improves to 5-2-1 overall.

In the ninth minute, UM junior Mauro Fuzetti, who earned a hat trick in the Wolverines win, took a chip shot from the left side and was able to beat Detroit junior goalkeeper Bryan Kloss (Fraser, MI/Bishop Foley Catholic) for the Wolverines first goal of the evening.

Detroit senior Simon Zahra (New South Wales, Australia/Evans) answered with a goal at the 33:28 mark to knot the game at one. Zahra was on the right side and took a hard shot from about 25 yards out, which zipped by the Wolverines junior keeper Patrick Sperry and hit the upper right of the net for Zahra's first goal of the season. UDM senior Renato Susnja (Dearborn, MI/Edsel Ford) earned an assist on the goal.

Michigan sophomore Cam Cameron fed a cross to teammate senior Jake Stacy at 36:17 who then shot the ball into the center of the net from about five yards out to have the scoreboard read 2-1, which ended up as the halftime score.

Fuzetti scored Michigan's next two goals, with freshman Adam Shaw and senior Alex Morisset each assisting on a goal for Fuzetti.

With under eight minutes to play in the match, Cameron received a pass from UM sophomore Adam Keller to score his first goal of the season and put the score at 5-1 in favor of the Wolverines.

Kloss allowed two goals in 45 minutes of play, while senior goalkeeper Luke Paneccasio (Sydney, Australia/Calvin) played the second half for the Titans and tallied one save, while allowing three goals. Sperry finished with three saves after allowing a goal for Michigan and freshman Chris Blais played the last 38 minutes in goal for the Wolverines.

The Titans will return to action when they host Xavier on Sept. 21 at Titan Field, with kick-off slated for 1 p.m.
