Behind a 12-save effort from freshman goalkeeper Joanna Hinde (Shelby Township, MI/Eisenhower), the Detroit Titan women's soccer team and Eastern Michigan played to a 0-0 double overtime draw Tuesday afternoon at Titan Field. Hinde has now recorded consecutive shutouts in her last two starts.
"Joanna did a great job and did everything that was expected by a goaltender," said head coach Mike Lupenec. "To get a second shutout by a freshman is a positive accomplishment for our team."
Hinde made six saves in each half while UDM's (1-1-1) defense once again stood tall throughout the game as Eastern (1-0-2) outshot the Titans 24-8.
"Our defense played really well especially on set piece situations," added Lupenec. "Coming into the game, we were missing three starters due to injury and I am very pleased how others stepped up today and battled against an undefeated team to earn our second straight shutout."
"We made a concentrated effort to keep people back to try and limit Eastern's scoring opportunities," said freshman midfielder Lauren Roffey (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield). "Our defense is continuing to improve by shutting out the last two opponents which in turn gives us a lot confidence heading into Friday's game against Madonna."
Offensively, seven of Detroit's eight shots were on goal, but none were able to get past EMU net minder Maggie Manville. UDM had its best opportunity at 58:54 in the second half when the Eagles turned the ball over outside the 18 yard line. Senior Nicole Gipson (Sterling Heights, MI/Stevenson) took possession and fired a shot to the right post, but Manville responded with a diving save to keep the game scoreless.
The Titans also caught a break on EMU's best two scoring opportunities as Vanessa Atanasoski fired a shot which hit Hinde's hands, then struck the crossbar and went over in the second half. Chelsasa Detrick also hit a solid shot at the 2:20 mark of the second overtime that beat Hinde but hit the crossbar from 18 yards out.
UDM hits the roads for the first time this season with a non-conference match at Madonna University on Friday, Sept. 5 at 4:00 p.m., in Livonia, Mich.
