For the second-straight game, Detroit's men's soccer team (2-6-0, 1-1-0 HL) faced a ranked opponent on the road as the Titans dropped a 2-0 decision to #7 UIC (7-0-2, 2-0-0) in Horizon League action late Sunday afternoon at Flames Field in Chicago, IL.
The Flames scored in the 23rd minute as sophomore Matt Spiess won the ball after there was a scramble at the front of the net. He then took a hard shot and put it into the top left corner of the net to put the score at 1-0.
About 53 minutes into the contest, UDM sophomore #Ken Simon# (Brighton, MI/Brighton), who led the Titans with four shots, won the ball. He then took a shot from the right of the net from about 20 yards out, but UIC junior netminder Jovan Bubonja was there for one of his four saves on the afternoon.
With less than nine minutes left in the match, Bubonja was tangled up with some defenders and was out of the net, which gave Detroit senior #Renato Susnja# (Dearborn, MI/Edsel Ford) a scoring chance, but saw it go just wide left of the net.
In the 82nd minute, UIC junior Baggio Husidic was at the top of the box and passed it to teammate junior Phillip Mitchell who beat UDM junior goalkeeper #Bryan Kloss# (Fraser, MI/Bishop Foley Catholic) for the second goal of the game.
Kloss ended the afternoon with two saves and allowed two goals in 90 minutes of play. Shots were fairly even as UIC had seven to UDM's six, but the Titans held the Flames to just one shot in the second half. The Flames had a 6-2 advantage on corner kicks and UIC tallied 15 fouls on the afternoon to the Titans nine. There were six total cards handed out Sunday, five of which were given to Detroit.
The Titans will return to action when they host Milwaukee on Oct. 3 at Titan Field (4 p.m.).
