Titans Edged in Double Overtime, 4-3, at Cleveland State

Box Score

Despite tying the game with less than three minutes left in regulation, Detroit was edged by Cleveland State in double overtime, 4-3, Sunday afternoon in Horizon League action at Krenzler Field in Ohio.

At the 105:10 mark, CSU (5-6-3, 2-1-2 HL) freshman Admir Suljevic fed a pass from the top of the box to senior Josh Williams, who then took a header from about five yards out, which went into the right side of the net for the game-winning goal.

In the 88th minute, sophomore Nate Robinson (Novi, MI/Novi) dished out a pass to Otieno Victor (Kisumu Nyanza, Kenya) at the top of the box. Victor had a through ball played in as CSU junior netminder Nick Harpel came out and Victor then chipped it over the keeper's head with the outside of his right foot into the center of the net to tie the game at three.

Senior Ken Simon (Brighton, MI/Brighton) took a free kick in the 78th minute and Harpel got a touch on it, but the ball went into the bottom right corner of the net to give Detroit (3-9-1, 1-4-0) its second goal of the game and Simon his second of the season.

Freshman Chris Kobayashi (New Hudson, MI/South Lyon) put the Titans on the board at the 55:15 mark as he took a shot from about 35 yards out, right in front of Detroit's bench, and saw it sail into the bottom left corner of the net for his first collegiate goal. Freshman Pat Lepera (Windsor, ON/St. Joseph's Catholic) earned an assist on the goal for his second of the year.

Suljevic scored CSU's first goal off a pass from senior Marco DiFranco in the 27th minute and Suljevic netted the Vikings second goal (60:34), while freshman Aaron Adkins dished out the assist. The Vikings' final goal in regulation came from senior Slavisa Ubiparipovic, off a pass from freshman Aaron Adkins at the 74:15 mark.

“Cleveland State dictated the game and we were lucky to get back in it with a couple goals,” said Detroit interim head coach Nick Deren. “It looked like we had some energy and we were going to be able to fight through and get the result, but we came up short in the end.”

Freshman Brandon Waterstradt (Dearborn Heights, MI/Catholic Central) was in net the entire contest for Detroit and tallied 10 saves, while allowing four CSU goals. Harpel allowed all three of Detroit's goals in regulation before being replaced by freshman Brad Stuver in overtime and he collected no saves, but did earn the win for the Vikings.

The Titans will return to action when they face intrastate rival, Oakland, in Rochester on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
