Detroit Battles Green Bay to Scoreless Draw

Box score vs. Green Bay 10-18-09

Sophomore keeper Joanna Hinde (Shelby Twp., MI/Eisenhower) recorded five saves and notched her third shutout of the season, but the Titans were unable to get on the board Sunday afternoon at Titan Field where the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer squad tied Horizon League foe Green Bay, 0-0.

It was the second time this season the Titans have ended a game in a scoreless tie, having earned the same result against Eastern Michigan at Titan Field on Sept. 8.

Back from serving a one-game red card suspension, Hinde made two crucial diving saves with time winding down in regulation to send the match into overtime. She made her final save of the contest with two seconds remaining in the second half. After Phoenix forward Nicole Dooher sped past a Detroit defender down the right side of the field she launched a shot to the far post, but a fully-extended Hinde got enough of the ball to knock it wide of the post and out-of-bounds as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

UDM head coach Mike Lupenec was quick to point out the play of not only Hinde, but the entire back line of senior Alauna Pierce (Toronto, ON/Mowat), sophomore Alexandra Suschak (Brecksville, OH/Brecksville), sophomore Rebecca Pidgeon (Ann Arbor, MI/Huron and freshman Mary Leone (St. Clair Shores, MI/Lakeview).

“Our back line did an amazing job today, and certainly having Joanna back was part of that,” said Lupenec. “Because of them there isn't a team in the conference that we haven't competed against.”

Offensively, the Titans had their chances but were unable to capitalize. Detroit outshot Green Bay (4-9-3 overall, 2-3-2 HL) 15-9, and led 5-4 in shots on goal.

“We put in a lot of effort today,” added Lupenec. “We outshot a good offensive team, and we did everything we needed to do win the game, but we just had too many near misses on good opportunities.”

Junior Selena Stanski (Tecumseh, ON/St. Anne's Secondary) was Detroit's leader with four shots, including one on goal. Senior Trina Kochanski (Royal Oak, MI/Kimball) and freshman Nina Carter (Clinton Twp., MI/Chippewa Valley) recorded three shots each, while Kochanski led the Titans with two shots on goal. Freshman Danielle Goszczynski (Harrison Twp., MI/L'Anse Creuse) put up two shots, one of which was on goal, and sophomore Lauren Roffey (West Bloomfield, MI/West Bloomfield) and freshmen Janae Paveglio (Flushing, MI/Flushing) and Sarah Dzuris (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) each had one shot.

"We've really seen throughout the year that no one on this team is a quitter," said Lupenec. "We fought the whole way, and I really think we outplayed them today."

With the tie, Detroit moves to 3-11-2 overall and 1-4-1 in league play.

The Titans will hit the road Friday to take on Loyola in Chicago for the final weekend of regular season play. The Ramblers (3-12-2 overall, 2-2-2 HL) last played on Thursday, falling 1-0 against Michigan State. In conference, the Ramblers have played to scoreless ties against Green Bay and Cleveland State, and pulled out 1-0 victories against Youngstown State and Valparaiso.

The last time Detroit met Loyola, the Ramblers won a 2-0 decision in Detroit. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. Friday, and you can follow all the action with Gamertracker.
