The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team returned to the road on Friday, but came up short as Green Bay defeated the Titans in a Horizon League match-up by a score of 3-0 at Santaga Stadium.
Senior David Znaty scored the first two goals for Green Bay, with the first coming just over seven minutes into the contest off an assist from junior JC Banks. Znaty took a shot to the left of the box and saw it trickle in past the goal line into the lower right hand corner of the net. The second goal from Znaty came at the 28:21 mark off a penalty kick.
In the 69th minute, junior David Prochazka took a corner kick and the ball ended up at the feet of sophomore AJ Konchar, who netted Green Bay's (7-1-2, 2-1 HL) third goal of the evening.
Detroit sophomore
Sam Seppo (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron) tied for a game-high three shots on goal, while freshman
Nate Robinson (Novi, MI/Novi) added two shots for the Titans.
“When you lose 75 percent of 50-50 balls, you are going to get the result we got tonight,” said UDM head coach
Morris Lupenec. “We have to give credit where credit is due and Green Bay is a very solid team. They outworked us in tonight's game and, in order to be a better soccer team, we need to match Green Bay's intensity.”
Detroit (1-7-1, 0-2 HL) freshman netminder
Brandon Waterstradt (Dearborn Heights, MI/Catholic Central) collected five saves, while allowing three goals in 90 minutes of action and freshman Ryan Wehking earned the win for the Phoenix after tallying three saves on the evening.
The Titans will next face Milwaukee on Sunday in Wisconsin at 2 p.m.
