Titans Fall at Oakland, 3-1

Box Score

The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision against Oakland at the OU Soccer Field Wednesday afternoon.

The game-winning goal for OU came in the 51st minute afterJosh Bennett took a corner kick to the left of the net. OU sophomore Winston Henderson received it and then saw his shot trickle in past the goal line to the center of the net.

With just under 24 minutes left in the contest, Bennett dished out an assist to freshman Danny Sowell, who made his way through some Detroit defenders and his attempt went past an outstretched UDM freshman netminder Brandon Waterstradt (Dearborn Heights, MI/Catholic Central) to give Oakland a 3-1 lead.

Detroit's lone goal came at the 55:55 mark as sophomore Otieno Victor (Kisumu Nyanza, Kenya/Kakamega) sent a cross from the left of the net. An OU defender ended up getting his foot on it and he kicked the ball into the center of the net for an Oakland own goal.

The Grizzlies opened up the scoring at the 16:40 mark as Bennett fed a pass to freshman Shane Lyons, who took a shot from about 30 yards out, and it made its way through UDM defenders and into the bottom of the right side of the net.

Detroit had a 17-14 advantage in shots, while corner kicks were even with seven a piece.

Waterstradt was in net the entire game for the Titans and tallied five saves, while allowing three OU goals. The Grizzlies had sophomore Mitch Hildebrandt in goal and he collected six saves in 90 minutes of action.

The Titans will return to Horizon League action on Saturday when they face Butler in Indianapolis at 4 p.m.
