Men's Soccer Comes Up Short In Overtime

Box Score

In its season opener, which saw six newcomers in the line-up for the University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team, the Titans came up short as they fell in overtime, 2-1, against IUPUI at Kuntz Stadium in Indianapolis, IN.

The first half was a battle as there were only four total shots the entire 45 minutes. One of them came at the 30:08 mark by Jaguar senior Caleb Lindemann, but Detroit freshman netminder Brandon Waterstradt (Dearborn Heights, MI/Detroit Catholic Central) was able to snatch the ball up for his first collegiate save.

UDM sophomore Sam Seppo (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron) had a solid chance to put the Titans on the board at 59:47 as he was able to weave his way through some defenders, but IUPUI sophomore goalkeeper Tyler Keever was able to stop the ball from crossing the line.

About 23 minutes into the second stanza, Jaguar junior Weston Hawkins took a hard shot to the middle of the net, but Waterstradt was able to get his hand on it to make the ball go over the net. After an IUPUI corner kick, the Jaguars had a few chances and ended up finding the back of the net as freshman Emile Garcia scored IUPUI's first goal of the night off an assist from junior Derek Craig at the 67:19 mark.

Detroit freshman Kevin Pinkos (Clarkston, MI/Clarkston) took a free kick with just under 15 minutes remaining in the contest from about 40 yards out. The ball ended up being served to senior Nick Dreshaj (Clinton Twp., MI/Chippewa Valley), who took a header and saw the ball hit the bottom right corner of the net to knot the game at one.

IUPUI senior Caleb Lindemann ended up scoring the game-winning goal at the 96:05 as he hit a laser that hit the bottom right hand corner of the net.

Waterstradt ended his first collegiate game with three saves, while allowing two goals and Keever was in net the entire contest for IUPUI and he also collected three saves and allowed one Titan goal.

The Titans will return to action when they face IPFW in Fort Wayne, IN, on Sept. 6 at 2 p.m.
