Titans Fall to Oregon State, 2-0

Box Score

In its first-ever meeting with Oregon State, the University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team (1-2-0) came up short by a score of 2-0 Friday afternoon in the opening game of the Gonzaga/Nike Soccer Classic at Martin Field in Spokane.

“I didn't think we really warmed up and came out with the energy and intensity that we needed,” said head coach Morris Lupenec. “We gave up two goals in the first 10 minutes in a very winnable game so we need to learn from this and move on to get a win on Sunday.”

The Beavers (3-0-1) scored both goals within the first 10 minutes of the contest and neither team was able to find the back of the net the rest of the game. The first goal happened at the 3:17 mark as OSU junior Brian Ramsey fed a pass to sophomore Colin Mitchell, who ended up beating Detroit freshman netminder Brandon Waterstradt (Dearborn Heights, MI/Catholic Central). The second goal came about seven minutes later from OSU sophomore Danny Mwanga, who dribbled from the left side, cut across the box and was able to find the far side of the net.

Freshman Pat Lepera (Windsor, ON / St. Joseph's Catholic) led Detroit in shots with two and the second came with just under six minutes remaining in the game after a corner kick, but the ball ended up going over the net. The other four shots for Detroit came from senior Jake Munchiando (Troy, MI/Troy) and sophomores Otieno Victor (Kisumu Nyanza, Kenya / Kakamega), Sam Seppo (Port Huron, MI), as well as Nate Robionson (Novi, MI/Novi).

“After the first 10 minutes, I thought we played well,” said Lupenec. "We had four scoring opportunities where we were one on one with the goalie and just couldn't capitalize. One thing I can say is that this team never gave up and did fight back after the slow start.”

The Beavers ended with a 12-6 advantage in shots and Detroit edged out OSU in corner kicks, 9-6.

Waterstradt was in net the entire 90 minutes for the Titans and tallied two saves, while allowing two goals and sophomore Steve Spangler earned the win for OSU as he collected one save in 90 minutes of action.

Detroit will next face host school Gonzaga, on Sunday at 4 p.m. EST.
