The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team (1-3-0) completed play at the Gonzaga/Nike Soccer Classic with a 4-0 loss to host-school, Gonzaga (3-1-2), at Martin Field in Spokane, WA, Sunday afternoon.
After playing to a scoreless tie in the first half, the Bulldogs netted the game-winning goal at the 47:32 mark as Nick Love dished out a pass to Philippe Garre who was able to get past the defender after an initial bump and saw the ball pass the goal line into the lower left corner of the net.
“Something we learned today is that we have to play 90 minutes of soccer, not just one half,” said Detroit head men's soccer coach
Morris Lupenec. “We fought our hearts and souls in the first half to make a game of it, but did the total opposite in the second half, which was very disappointing. Hopefully this is the poorest half we play all year because it was very difficult to watch.”
Garre scored the second goal about six minutes later off an assist from James Partee, while Tye Perdido netted Gonzaga's last two goals with Love assisting on the first (72:56) and Mitchell Weller earning a helper on the second (80:59).
Sophomore
Otieno Victor (Kisumu Nyanza, Kenya / Kakamega) was named to the all-tournament team for his efforts during the weekend, including leading the Titans with three shots against the Bulldogs, while sophomore
Sam Seppo (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron) tacked on two shots for UDM.
Detroit freshman netminder
Brandon Waterstradt (Dearborn Heights, MI/Catholic Central) collected eight saves, while allowing four goals in 90 minutes of action, and Scott Barnum tallied one save for the Bulldogs.
“Brandon kept us in the match as he played a heck of a game,” commented Lupenec. “He definitely had a solid game for us and we cannot fault him for any of the goals that Gonzaga scored today.”
The Titans continue play on the road this week as they face Michigan in Ann Arbor on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
