Titans Come Up Short at Michigan

Box Score

The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team continued play on the road Wednesday evening, but came up short as Michigan defeated the Titans by a score of 3-1 at the U-M Soccer Complex.

Detroit senior Ken Simon (Brighton, MI/Brighton) helped put the Titans (1-4-0) on the scoreboard first as he took a free kick from the right side of the net, about 25 yards out at the 28:45 mark. Freshman Pat Lepera (Windsor, ON/St. Joseph's Catholic) got his foot on the ball and scored in the lower right hand corner of the net for his first collegiate goal.

“Bottom line is we played one of the best halves of the year the first 45 minutes today,” said Detroit head coach Morris Lupenec. “We knew that they were going to come hard at us in the second half and we made little mistakes against a good team that cost us the game.”

With the score tied, 1-1, Michigan (5-1-0) freshman Hamoody Saad took a free kick in the 67th minute and hit a laser to the high right side of the net for the game-winning goal. The Wolverines' first goal of the night came at 57:55 as senior Mario Fuzetti got a hold of the ball off a deflection and shot a rocket to the right side of the net.

Michigan junior Jeff Quijano scored Michigan's final goal of the night to the right side of the goal off a deflection from Detroit freshman netminder Brandon Waterstradt (Dearborn Heights, MI/Catholic Central).

Waterstradt was in goal the entire game and tallied six saves, and redshirt sophomore U-M goalkeeper Chris Blais collected four saves in 90 minutes of action

Corner kicks were even at six a piece, while Michigan had a 15-7 advantage in shots.

The Titans will return to action when they face Xavier on Friday in Cincinnati at 7:30 p.m.
