It came down to the wire, but Detroit was able to stop a Xavier attempt at the line with two seconds left to end the game in a 2-2 tie in men's soccer action at the XU Soccer Complex in Cincinnati Friday night.
Sophomore
Otieno Victor (Kisumu Nyanza, Kenya/Kakamega) had a chance to give the Titans another goal in the closing minutes of regulation, but his shot hit the post and then sophomore
Sam Seppo (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron) had an opportunity off the rebound, but his chance went over the net.
At the 54:09 mark, an XU player attempted to clear the ball at the top of the box, but could not get his foot on it. UDM senior
Nick Dreshaj (Clinton Twp., MI/Chippewa Valley) was defending him and took advantage of the misplay and took a shot to the lower right corner of the net from about 20 yards out to knot the game at two. The goal was unassisted and it was Dreshaj's second goal of the year.
“We did some nice things to battle back after being giving up an early goal,” said head coach
Morris Lupenec. “Bottom line is that we did not lose today. We battled back, got a result from it and hopefully we can play well at home this Friday in our conference opener.”
The Musketeers (0-3-1) took a 2-1 lead with just over a minute remaining in the second half after senior Kennedy Nakwa received a long pass from sophomore Sean Ryan into the right side of box. Nakwa then took a hard shot from about 10 yards out and the ball snuck into the bottom left corner of the net.
Detroit's (1-4-1) first goal of the night came from Victor, which is his second of the year, about halfway into the first stanza. UDM senior
Ken Simon (Brighton, MI/Brighton) passed it to Victor on the run, who then beat an XU defender one-on-one and fired it deep into the box to tie the game at one.
The first goal of the game was netted by Xavier junior Brandon Bucher as he took a shot from the top right corner of the box and the ball went over Detroit freshman netminder
Brandon Waterstradt's (Dearborn Heights, MI/Catholic Central) right shoulder. Both junior Andy Dimbi and freshman Luke Spencer earned an assist on the play.
Waterstradt collected eight saves, while allowing one goal in 94:40 minutes and now owns a 1-4-1 record in net. UDM freshman
Martin Robertson (Newmarket, ON/St. Andrew's College) also saw time in net as he played the last 15:20 of the first half and he allowed one goal during that span. Freshman Justin Marshall was in net the entire contest for the Musketeers and tallied three saves, while allowing two Detroit goals.
UDM edged out the Musketeers in shots, 16-14, while Xavier had an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.
The Titans will return to action when they play in their first home game of the season on Sept. 25 against Horizon League member school, Valparaiso, at 4 p.m.
