Titans Fall to Oral Roberts in Overtime

Box Score

Not to break with tradition, the University of Detroit Mercy and Oral Roberts men's soccer match went into overtime, which they have done in all previous three meetings, but the Golden Eagles snuck in a goal in the second extra session to defeat the Titans by a score of 2-1 Sunday afternoon at Titan Field.

Five minutes into the second overtime, Golden Eagles freshman Aaron Douthit fed a pass to senior Juan Chang, who took a shot and saw it go past Detroit freshman netminder Brandon Waterstradt (Dearborn Heights, MI/Catholic Central) into the lower right corner of the net for the game-winning goal.

Douthit also earned an assist on ORU's (3-2-1) first goal, which came at the 53:15 mark as freshman Gary Arauz took a shot from about 20 yards out, which was then deflected and went into the right side of the net to tie the game at one a piece.

Detroit (1-6-1) opened up the scoring at with just under 15 minutes left in the first half when senior Nick Dreshaj (Clinton Twp., MI/Chippewa Valley) headed the ball to freshman Kevin Pinkos (Clarkston, MI/Clarkston), who then took another header, which was received by sophomore Sam Seppo (Port Huron, MI/Port Huron). Seppo then headed the ball into the lower right corner for his first goal of the season.

“It is the will to win and it is as simple as that," said Detroit head coach Morris Lupenec. "When our whole team understands that it is about the will to win, then we will start winning some of these close games, but until we comprehend that, we are going to keep having the same result on the field.”

Detroit outshot ORU, 21-14, and the Titans had a slight 3-2 advantage in corner kicks. In over 105 minutes of work, Waterstradt tallied five saves for UDM, while allowing two goals and junior Andrew Techanchuk played the entire contest for the Golden Eagles and collected four saves, while allowing one Titan goal.

The Titans will return to action when they face Green Bay in Wisconsin this Friday at 8 p.m.
