DETROIT – The Detroit Titans were defeated by #8 Butler by the final score of 2-0 on Saturday afternoon at Titan Field.
Butler (15-0-1, 7-0 Horizon) wrapped up the number one seed in the Horizon League Tournament with the victory. The Bulldogs got out to a 2-0 lead at halftime, and held on for their seventh conference win of the year. The Titans (7-7-2, 4-3 Horizon) fall to 4-3 in league play. They entered Saturday tied for second place in the Horizon League standings with Green Bay. The Phoenix will host Loyola tonight at Aldo Santaga Stadium. Action gets started at 7:00 p.m.
The Bulldogs grabbed the lead with a goal in the 10th minute of action. Matt Hedges scored his fifth goal of the season off an assist from Ben Sippola. The second goal of the game came late in the first half as Adekulne Oluyedun found the back of the net in the 41st minute of play off an assist from Kyle Pateros.
Brandon Waterstradt (Dearborn Heights, Mich./Detroit Catholic Central) was the goalkeeper for the Titans. Waterstradt played all 90 minutes in the net and ended the game with six saves.
Detroit had some close calls that could have put them on the scoreboard. The best chance came off a header from
Jeremy Stoychoff (Canton, Mich./Salem). Stoychoff took the cross pass and made good contact on the ball, but the Titans were unable to score as the ball bounced off the crossbar.
Corner kicks were even at four each. Both the Titans and Bulldogs took eight shots in the first period. Butler ended the game with 12 compared to 10 for Detroit.
Fans make sure to visit Titan Field on Nov. 3 when the Titans host Oakland in the last home game of the season. Seniors
