The men's soccer team picked up their fourth win of the season with a 2-1 victory on the road at Western Michigan on Wednesday night.

Junior Ya Ya Toure (Ypsilanti, MI/Willow Run) scored the game winner as he was able to chip the ball over the Bronco goalkeeper in the 85th minute play. Freshman Kevin Gill (Sterling Heights, MI/De La Salle Collegiate) set up the play as he fed Toure with a lob pass in the middle of the field to pick up the assist, and Toure did the rest in scoring his team-best fifth goal.

“That was a big win for us tonight,” said head coach Nicholas Deren. “To come back from a one goal deficit in the second half against a quality team like Western Michigan is big. They are strong defensively, and they were on a roll so I am proud of the guys for coming back after the Green Bay game and getting this win.”

Sophomore Kevin Pinkos (Clarkston, MI/Clarkston) scored the first goal of the game for the Titans (4-6-1). Pinkos connected on his first goal of the season just five minutes after Western Michigan (7-3-1) took the lead. Freshman Adam Bedell (Livonia, MI/Churchill) ran to the near sideline to take the throw in for Detroit. Bedell got the ball to senior Ken Simon (Brighton, MI/Brighton) who flicked the ball to Pinkos and he did the rest scoring from two yards out.

“We had to play this game without our captain, but everyone on the team picked up the load and did a good job in order for us to earn this win,” added Deren.

Detroit had some new faces on the field to start the game as freshman Mike Pugh (Shelby Twp., MI/De La Salle Collegiate) joined juniors Matt Nedwicki (Dearborn, MI/Divine Child) and Julio Castillo (Cupertino, CA/Homestead) in the starting lineup to face the Broncos.

Western Michigan took seven corner kicks in the first half, which kept pressure on sophomore Brandon Waterstradt (Dearborn Heights, MI/Detroit Catholic Central). Waterstradt was solid in net ending the contest with 10 saves first 45 minutes of action as he made four saves. He continued to play well in the second half as the sophomore ended the game with 10 saves.

Joel Del Toro scored the only goal of the game for WMU. Del Toro was assisted on the goal by Doug Raak and Kai Mendes.

Detroit will return to action with a Horizon League matchup at Wright State on Sunday. The game will begin at 5:00 p.m.
