The women's soccer team hosted an alumni game at Titan Field Saturday afternoon with 11 former Titans returning to play an exhibition match against the current 2010 team, with this year's squad pulling off a 2-1 come from behind victory.
“It's always good to see the girls come back that basically have contributed to our program," said head coach
Mike Lupenec. "I've been here for 18 years and a lot of these girls have had successful seasons. We have won championships with these girls and it's just a great thing to see them again. They're coming here with their husbands and their families and their kids.'
The alumni were the first to tally as
Melanie Slusher scored a first half goal with
Danielle McIntyre drawing the assist. Slusher was playing in her first ever alumni game.
“It felt pretty good to be back. I was injured last year so I wasn't able to play in the alumni game so this is my first game. It was a lot of fun,” said Slusher.
The alumni would hold the 1-0 lead, but with less than 20 minutes remaining in the second half of play, sophomore
Rebekah Dornbos (Midland, MI/Midland) netted the first of her two goals on the day. Dornbos later added the final marker of the game with just 46 seconds left in regulation to give the 2010 squad the win.
Titans alumni goalkeeper
Erika Rust, who sits fourth all-time on the Detroit career saves list, enjoys coming back to play with her former teammates despite having a busy day in net for the alumni.
“It was tough. It's always tough when you have a bunch of ladies, who some of us play more than others, playing a bunch of fit college girls, but it's always a lot of fun too and it's always great to see everyone.”
Freshmen
Kaitlyn Quarrel (Thunder Bay, ON/St. Ignatius) and N
ina Carter (Clinton Twp., MI/Chippewa Valley) each had an assist for the 2010 Titans on the day.
Detroit will play a pair of exhibition matches this weekend with games Friday at Western Michigan (4:00 p.m.) and Sunday at Toledo (1:00 p.m.) before opening the regular season on August 20 at the University of Michigan.
