Titans And Bearcats End Game Tied At 1-1

Box Score

Ya Ya Toure (Ypsilanti, MI/Willow Run) scored his first goal of the season for the Titans, and it was a big one as Detroit tied the Cincinnati Bearcats over Labor Day weekend.

The Bearcats put a goal on the scoreboard within the first five minutes of action and Detroit (0-1-1) was forced to play from behind for a majority of the game, but after 110 minutes of very physical action on the field, the game would end in a 1-1 tie.

The Bearcats took the early lead after Matt Bahner connected on a header for his second goal of the season. Mark Konitsch and Branden Stelmak picked up assists on the play.

The Titans tied it in the 74th minute of action as Toure evened the game off a great pass from Nate Robinson (Novi, MI/Novi). Robinson sent a lob pass in from the far side of the field and Toure played it perfectly as he beat the keeper with a header that found the net on the right side.

After 90 minutes, the game was sent into overtime where both teams provided plenty of offense during the extra sessions, but neither side was able to capitalize. The best scoring opportunity of the game came late in the second overtime for the Titans as Toure sliced through the Bearcat defense and found Ken Simon (Brighton, MI/Brighton) with only the keeper to beat. Simon got off a nice shot, but the keeper made a diving save to put the finishing touches on the game.

"We learned a valuable lesson after the Michigan game," head coach Nicholas Deren explained. "We played hard and had a really good chance to win the game late, but it just didn't go our way. Now, we are going to get a good week of practice in and head to South Carolina looking for two wins."

The first half was physical as Detroit was whistled for eight fouls, and the Bearcats were close behind with seven. The contact would continue into the second half and beyond as there were a total of eight yellow cards in the contest.

Martin Robertson (Newmarket, ON/St. Andrew's) had a great game for Detroit as he walked away with eight saves.

The best scoring opportunity for UDM in the first half came off a corner kick. Robinson sent the ball to the far side of the field over a group of players to Simon, whose header was directed to Toure. Toure then sent the ball to the left side of the net, but the shot was saved by a Cincinnati defender.

Adam Philp (Windsor, ON/St. Joseph's Catholic) made an amazing defensive play for the red, white and blue in the second half. Tristan Watson made a move up the far side of the field for the Bearcats and fired a shot at Robertson. Robertson made the save, but Cincinnati's Andre Sharpe was in position for the rebound. Sharpe took a shot at what looked to be an empty net, but Philp came out of nowhere to deny the goal.

Detroit will return to action next weekend when it travels to Greenville, SC, for the Spinx/Diadora Classic Tournament. The Titans will face host Furman on Friday and the College of Charleston on Sunday.
