DETROIT -- Thanks to an overpowering inside game in the first half and some hot outside shooting in the second, the Detroit women's basketball team was victorious in its exhibition debut as the Titans rolled over Madonna 93-46 on Saturday at Calihan Hall.

Detroit put a smile on the faces of a number of alums that came back as the Titans honored more than 30 women's basketball players from the program's history at halftime. Detroit shot 42% for the game and almost 47% in the second half, while holding a 69-35 rebounding advantage over Madonna. The Titans held the Crusaders to 23% shooting, including 17% in the second period where MU was just 6-of-34.

Freshman Shareta Brown (Grand Blanc, MI/Grand Blanc) led the way with a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds. The rookie was 8-of-16 from the field and 7-of-10 from the free throw line.

Junior Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) also recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 boards, while junior Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) had 17 points, six rebounds and four assists.

The game was tied at 11-all with 11:50 to go in the first, when the Titans put some distance between themselves and the Crusaders with a 14-0 run. Shayok started the spurt with a jumper inside and then a three on the next possession. Brown had seven of the next nine points as she controlled the middle, while Fambro added the other basket.

Madonna was able to cut the Titan lead to just seven, 28-21, but Detroit went into the half up by nine, 32-23.  The red, white and blue then put the visiting Crusaders away with a 26-4 run in the first eight minutes of the second half to jump out to a 58-27 advantage.

Brown began the second stanza with the first five buckets for UDM. After a Madonna basket, Shayok added two before senior Lauren Allen (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) tallied six straight. Junior Chanahl Putnam (Almont, MI/Almont) had four points in the run, sophomore Senee Shearer (Detroit, MI/Pershing) hit a pair of triples and Allen would later put in another three.

UDM would continue to add to its lead as the Titan defense never let up in the 47-point win.

Allen was 4-of-5 from the field with a pair of 3-pointers and finished with 12 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Putnam and Shearer each had nine apiece, while freshman Brie Wilcox (London ON/Sir Wilfrid Laurier) pulled down six rebounds off the bench. Sophomore Julianna Glanz (St. John's, MI/Waverly) swatted four shots, while senior Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) tallied four points, three rebounds, two assists and two steals.

The Titans will now have almost two weeks to get ready for the regular season, which begins on Nov. 11 at Indiana State in the opening game of the Preseason WNIT.

Game Notes:
All the basketball alumni were treated to a reception after the game… Detroit and Madonna have met just once in the regular season with the Titans posting an 83-17 victory on Feb. 22, 1978… Freshman Audrey Matteson was the only Titan who did not play (injury)… Detroit had more defensive rebounds (41) then Madonna had total in the game (35).
