AKRON, Ohio -- The Detroit women's basketball team once again mounted a second-half comeback, but the Titans saw their game-tying shot just rim out as UDM dropped a 60-58 contest to Howard in the final game of the Preseason WNIT Consolation Round.
Freshman
Shareta Brown (Grand Blanc, MI/Grand Blanc) led the way with 14 points and 10 rebounds for her second double-double in three games. She also came away with a team-high three steals and had a block.
Junior
Chanahl Putnam (Almont, MI/Almont) had 13 points on 5-of-12 shooting, while junior
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) came close to a double-double finishing with 11 points and nine rebounds.
The game was tied for the eighth time at 58-all when Howard (1-2) knocked in a basket with just one minute left, and then the Bison regained the lead with 34 seconds on the clock. Detroit took control of the ball and would end up calling a timeout with nine seconds left.
The game-tying play saw the Titans (0-3) find Brown down low and the rookie made a great move and got to the rim, but the shot just came off as the Bison claimed the defensive rebound with one second left in regulation.
It was close right from the very start as neither team had more than a five-point lead, with the Titans holding that advantage at 10-5 and 12-7. From there, UDM and Howard went back and forth and the game was tied six times, including 26-all at the break.
The game was knotted at 28-all early in the second half when the Bison started to pull ahead and slowly build a lead as big as nine points, 52-43 with 7:53 remaining.
The Titans then went to work chopping that down and actually jumped out in front by two, 58-56 with 1:25 left. The 15-4 run across that six-minute span saw Putnam start the spurt with five-straight points, and then Shayok give UDM a lead with a 3-pointer off a great pass from senior
Lauren Allen (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester).
Allen ended the game with eight points, five assists and three rebounds. Senior
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) had five points and five assists, reaching another milestone as she moved into sixth place in Titan history with 368 career helpers.
The Titans shot 41% for the game and 44% in the second half, while also connecting on 7-of-17 from three-point range.
Saadia Doyle was the high scorer for Howard finishing with 22 points and 10 boards.
The Titans will continue a swing of five games in nine days on Tuesday as Detroit hosts Bowling Green in its home opener on the new Dick Vitale Court at Calihan Hall. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m.
