EAST LANSING, Mich. – Senior
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) moved up in the Titan record books with her two assists, but the Titans could not rebound after a quick Michigan State start as Detroit fell on the road to the Spartans, 64-41, on Tuesday night.
Jones also had eight points and five rebounds as she tied Carrie Banks' fifth-place total in career assists at 382.
Freshman
Shareta Brown (Grand Blanc, MI/Grand Blanc) had a team-high 11 points and also grabbed five rebounds, while junior
Chanahl Putnam (Almont, MI/Almont) added eight points and three boards.
Shots from long range were falling early and often for both squads as MSU (7-3) hit six of its first seven 3-pointers, including five in a row, while Detroit (1-7) nailed three of its first four from beyond the arc. The Spartans scored the game's first seven points, but UDM would cut that deficit to four, 10-6, as senior
Lauren Allen (Rochester Hills, MI/Rochester) connected on her lone trey of the game.
The Titans kept battling but the Spartans extended their lead by going on an 8-0 run after and eventually opened a 12-point lead. The Titans never gave up though and kept chipping away. Down 30-18, Brown started a mini-run with an old fashioned three-point play. The next time down the floor, Jones went 1-of-2 from the charity stripe and the Titans were within eight, 30-22, before going into the half down 33-24.
Michigan State hit a 3-pointer to start the second stanza to run its score back up to double digits. Another free throw by Jones made it an 11-point game, 36-25, but that was as close as the red, white and blue could get.
Despite holding the green and white to under 40% shooting in the second period and only three 3-pointers, the Titans could not get the offense going and Michigan State went on to win the contest.
Allen finished the game with six points and four rebounds. Junior
Yar Shayok (Ottawa, ON/Hillcrest) collected five rebounds and had two points, while sophomore
Megan Hatter (Howell, MI/Howell) posted three points and two caroms.
