DETROIT – The Detroit Titan men's soccer team (3-5-0, 0-1 HL) took a tough loss on Saturday as they were defeated 2-1 in overtime by the Wright State Raiders (5-2-1, 1-0 HL) in the Horizon League home opener.
Bryce Rockwell-Ashton won the game for Wright State with an unassisted goal in the overtime period. Rockwell-Ashton dribbled left, towards the middle of the field and blasted a shot to the left side of the net for the game-winner.
The teams ended regulation deadlocked at 1-1 after each squad connected on a penalty kick. Wright State's Kenji Goldman found the back of the net for the Raiders in the first half, and
Otieno Victor tied the game at 1-1 in the second half with his second successful penalty kick of the season. Victor leads the team with four goals on the season.
Emotions were high in the Horizon League home opener and it showed on the field as nine yellow cards were handed out. Wright State committed 20 fouls, while Detroit was close behind with 18.
The physical play took a toll on Detroit as two players were sent to the sidelines to clean up injuries.
Jeremy Stoychoff received a cut above his left eye, and
Pat Lepera came away spitting up blood as he battled for a ball in the air. Stoychoff was able to return, Lepera was not.
Each team had multiple offensive opportunities on Saturday, but the shots were rarely on goal. Only two saves were made on the day and they were both by Detroit's
Anthony Shepherd.
The Raiders out shot Detroit 15-8, and they took nine corner kicks compared to just two for the Titans.
Detroit will return to action with a home game against Western Michigan on Wednesday, Sept. 28. Their next Horizon League contest will be on the road against Valparaiso on Friday, Sept. 30.
