YOUNGSTOWN STATE, Ohio -- Freshman
Shareta Brown (Pontiac, MI/Grand Blanc) tallied her eighth double-double of the season, but the Titans ran into a red hot Penguins' squad and fell on the road to Youngstown State, 80-67, on Thursday.
Brown had 21 points and 12 rebounds to lead Detroit (9-11, 5-3 HL). Sophomore
Senee Shearer (Detroit, MI/Pershing) had 12 points – on four 3-pointers - while senior
Jalesa Jones (Detroit, MI/Pershing) added 11 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals.
Youngstown State (9-10, 3-5 HL) tied a school record with 15 3-pointers and senior Kenya Middlebrooks broke the Penguins' record with eight of them as she set a career-high with 30 points in the contest. She was 10-of-14 in the game and 8-of-10 from three, including six triples in the second half.
The Penguins came out hot from three-point range right from the very start hitting their first two and three of their first four treys to take an early 9-3 lead. YSU would continue to hit from the outside with three more trifectas – it was 6-of-8 to start the game – as the Penguins built a double-digit lead, 26-13, with 7:24 left in the half.
That was when Shearer caught fire nailing three triples of her own in the next two minutes to cut the YSU advantage to six, 28-22, with 5:03 left. Prior to that, UDM had opened the game 0-of-8 from behind the arc. Youngstown State, though, was able to hold off the Titan surge and take a 35-26 lead into the locker room.
Detroit would get within five, 35-30, at the start of the second half as Jones opened the stanza with a layup and a minute later connected on a jump shot. Youngstown State then hit a three to push it back to eight.
Detroit would pull within five two more times, but YSU would answer both occasions with a three-point play, the latest at 41-36 after a three by Shearer before another trey from Middlebrooks.
UDM then trailed by 11, 57-46, when Jones drove the lane and flipped one up and in, while being fouled in the process. She would hit her free throw and the deficit was 57-49 with 10:13 remaining.
YSU then went on an 11-1 run to take control of the game as the red, white and blue could never get back within single digits.
Brown was 6-of-10 from the field and 9-of-12 from the free throw line, while Jones tied her season high in steals. Junior
Chanahl Putnam (Almont, MI/Almont) had nine points and junior
Demeisha Fambro (Detroit, MI/Crockett Tech) scored eight off the bench.
UDM outscored Youngstown State, 36-20, in the paint and held a decisive 19-3 advantage in second chance opportunities. The Titans also owned the boards, 37-24, including 19 offensive rebounds.
The Titans will return to action on Saturday when Detroit visits Cleveland State. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m., at the Wolstein Center.
