Dayton (10/12/12)-
Adam Bedell and
Matt Harkema both scored a goal as the University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team shutout Wright State, 2-0, Friday night in Dayton.
Detroit (6-6, 3-0 HL) stayed perfect in the Horizon League and handed the Raiders (3-8-1, 1-2-1 HL) their second loss in league play.
Nathan Steinwascher was on form early, making a diving save on a WSU free kick in the seventh minute. Steinwascher made six saves on the night to earn his third shutout this year. "Nathan played an excellent game," said head coach
Nicholas Deren. "His box management was perfect the whole night which limited Wright State's chances in our penalty area."
The Titans drew blood first with a goal by Harkema in the 24th minute. Off a throw-in, Bedell found Harkema outside the penalty box and he fired a shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar and went in to give UDM a 1-0 lead.
Less then four minutes later,
Pat Lepera crossed a ball thorugh the box to Bedell and he fired the ball past the keeper to take a two-goal lead in the 27th minute. Bedell currently leads the Horizon League with eight goals on the year, three goals ahead of the nearest competitor.
Nearing the end of the first half, Wright State made a run at the net off a free kick. Steinwascher stood strong and made a save on a well struck ball to keep the Raiders off the board.
The Titan defense and Steinwascher held their ground in the second half allowing two shots on goal, which Steinwascher was able to stear away to preserve the shutout.
UDM sits alone atop the Horizon League as the only team with three league wins. "Our goal this year was to focus only on the Horizon League" said Deren. "The 3-0 start is definitly a positive move in the right direction towards our league goals."
Detroit will be in action again when they travel to Kalamazoo to face Western Michigan on Wednesday at 4:00.
