Senior Day Interview
DETROIT (10/14/2012) -- It was Senior Day at Titan Field and it was fitting that a pair of seniors teamed up for the game-winning goal as
Sarah Dzuris placed a header off the corner kick by
Rebekah Dornbos into the net in the 77th minute of the game in a 2-0 win over the Cleveland State Vikings Sunday afternoon.
“Rebekah played a nice ball and I put my head on it and it went in,” said Dzuris, who has played primarily as a defender this year and scored her first goal of the season.
Prior to the contest, seniors Dzuris, Dornbos,
Nina Carter,
Mary Leone and
Janae Paveglio had the chance to be recognized for their Titan careers. The five of them have spent four years with UDM and have played in a combined 322 games.
The weather did not provide quality soccer conditions throughout the afternoon as the rain and wind made long balls difficult. Cleveland State (5-10, 1-4 HL) came in looking to take advantage of the bad weather playing with the wind in the first half. They almost did after a few close calls including a few high bounces that the wind unexpectedly carried into near scoring chances. Cleveland State held a 4-3 shooting advantage and also had a 4-2 advantage in corner kicks as the teams were scoreless heading into the half.
UDM (7-6-1, 4-2 HL) applied greater pressure in the second half and capitalized on the corner kick from Dornbos to Dzuris. The Titans added a second goal at the 79:42 mark of the game as
Kaitlyn Quarrell set up
Abby McCollum for an easy tap in. Quarrell took the ball deep inside the 18-yard box and to the left post and the Vikings' goalkeeper came out to challenge. Quarrell then played the ball in front of the net, where McCollum tallied her fourth goal of the year.
McCollum's goal ties her with Carter for the team lead and also a share of the team lead in points with Quarrell at nine apiece.
Nora Abolins made four saves tending the nets for Detroit and posted her seventh shutout of the season and 22nd shutout of her career, meaning she is just one away from tying the all-time UDM women's soccer career mark of 23 shared by both Alisson Dube and Katie Fortenberry.
With Valparaiso and Wright State playing to a 0-0 draw on Sunday, Detroit (7-6-1, 4-2 HL) is currently in first place in the Horizon League. Second place Milwaukee (4-7-1, 3-2 HL) has two games left on the schedule with a game Friday at Green Bay and then hosting Cleveland State to close out the Horizon League slate on Oct. 26. Valparaiso (9-4-2, 2-1-1 HL) currently sits in third place and hosts sixth place Youngstown State (7-6, 2-2 HL) on Saturday and finishes the season at Green Bay on Oct. 27. The sixth place Penguins will host Wright State (6-3-6, 1-1-3 HL) on Oct .27.
Detroit is in prime position to finish in the top two in the league closing its conference schedule on Oct. 24 hosting Youngstown State at Titan Field. A top-two finish would give UDM an automatic berth in the Horizon League Semifinals. Finishing as the top seed would mean that Detroit would serve as host for both the Horizon League Semifinals and championship game.
The Titans will host a non-conference match on Friday afternoon against Madonna at 3:00 p.m.
