Postgame Interview with Borawski
DETROIT (10/19/2012) --
Jennifer Borawski and
Mary Leone tallied their first collegiate goals and goalkeeper
Nora Abolins tied the school's all-time mark with her 23
rd career shutout as the Detroit Titans won their third straight with a 3-0 victory over Madonna Friday afternoon in non-conference action at Titan Field.
Freshman Borawski started the Titan scoring at 25:24. Borawski headed in a ball from
Abby McCollum and
Nina Carter for her first collegiate marker.
“I just made the run in and I saw Nina about to play the ball. I thought Abby had it but I was there just in case and Nina played a great ball. It happened to take a bounce and I headed it and it found the back of the net,” said Borawski
Detroit (8-6-1, 4-2 Horizon League) hosted Madonna (8-6, 4-1 WHAC) Friday in the fourth meeting ever between the two teams. The Titans have won all three previous meetings.
“We started off a little slow but after about 20 minutes we started to pick up our game and play our level of soccer,” added Borawski.
Haley Burtraw fired a laser from the top of the 18-yard box that found the upper right corner of the net in the 42
nd minute for her fourth of the season. The shot gave Detroit a 2-0 lead heading into the half. The Titans entered the break with an 11-0 advantage in total shots.
The third goal of the day was another first as Leone took a shot from the right of the 18-yard box and after the ball made its way around a few defenders, it found its way into the back of the net for her first ever tally in 62 career games for the defender.
Detroit finished the game with a 20-1 overall advantage in total shots, 9-0 advantage in overall corner kicks, to come out with the 3-0 victory.
UDM goalkeeper Abolins, who did not have to record a save, tied the school's all-time career mark in shutouts as she posted the 23rd of her career in 50 games joining Alisson Dube and Katie Fortenberry in a three-way tie for the all-time mark.
It was the third straight clean sheet for Abolins who has not allowed a goal in 273:22 since Valparaiso scored in the final minutes back on Oct. 6. Abolins lowered her season goals against average to 0.56 and her save percentage to .871 with eight total shutouts on the season. The eight blankings this season also ties a personal single season-best, established last season, and moves her one behind Fortenberry for the most shutouts in a single-season.
Detroit will play its final contest of the regular season on Wednesday afternoon as Youngstown State will head to Titan Field for a 4:00 p.m. match-up.
