MILWAUKEE, Wis. (10/24/12) - The University of Detroit Mercy men's soccer team earned a berth into the Horizon League Tournament with a 1-0 victory at Milwaukee on Wednesday evening.
Adam Bedell scored his league-leading ninth goal - on a penalty kick - as Detroit improved to 8-7 (4-1 HL) and clinched a spot in the conference tournament. The Panthers fell to 7-6-2 (1-2-2 HL) and suffered their first home loss of the season.
Detroit got on the board thanks to a Milwaukee foul in the box on Mike Pugh as he was on a breakaway towards the goal. Bedell then took the penalty kick and beat the diving keeper to score the only goal in the contest less than a minute into the second half.
Bedell nearly had one earlier in the contest when he beat the defense, but shot the ball just high and it deflected off the cross bar in the 24th minute. Minutes later, Milwaukee almost took the lead but Titan keeper Nathan Steinwascher made a diving save to keep the game knotted at zero going into the half.
Milwaukee got four shots on goal in the second half, but Steinwascher was able to steer all of them away to earn his fourth shutout of the year.
The Titans currently sit atop the Horizon League with four wins and 12 points. If UDM wins its last two conference games, it will clinch the top seed in the Horizon League Tournament and earn a first-round bye and the right to host the semifinals and championship game.
Detroit will look to extend its lead when it returns to action on Saturday as the Titans host Jesuit-rival Loyola at 3:00 p.m. Prior to the start of the contest, UDM will honor its' senior class.
