Postgame Video with McCalister.
Postgame Video with Shayok.
TAMPA, Fla. (12/31/12) -- Senior
Yar Shayok became the 17th player in school history to reach 1,000 career points as the Detroit women's basketball team gave the BIG EAST's South Florida Bulls a battle, but in a game that featured 43 combined fouls, the Titans fell, 74-60, at the Sun Dome on New Year's Eve.
The loss dropped UDM to 7-5 on the year, while USF moved to 11-2. Detroit was whistled for 21 fouls – including three technical fouls – and South Florida was called for 22, sending Detroit to the line for a 21-of-28 effort on the day.
The Titan defense did a good job in forcing South Florida into a season-high 24 turnovers and coming away with a season-best 12 steals.
Sophomore
Shareta Brown led the way with a team-high 24 points and 10 rebounds, her 21st career 20-point game and 17th double-double. The nation's leader in scoring coming in at 26.2 ppg., scored 18 points in the first half alone and was 5-of-12 from the field and a perfect 13-of-13 from the free throw line.
Shayok scored seven points and grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds, but it was her second basket of the game at 10:25 that gave her 1,000. She now has 1,003 points, just 30 behind Mary Lillie for 16th in school history.
Freshman
Rosanna Reynolds had nine points, four rebounds, a team-high five assists and tied her season high with three steals, while rookie
Tayelor McCalister netted nine points and had three rebounds and two steals.
The Titans did not handle the USF full court pressure well early, turning it over six times in the first four minutes of action, but Detroit quickly adjusted and had just 12 the rest of the way.
The early turnovers saw South Florida jump out to a 13-4 lead, but the Titans stormed back with 11-straight points to take a 15-13 advantage. Brown started that with back-to-back baskets and after senior
Demeisha Fambro and Shayok added jumpers, Fambro gave Detroit a lead with a trey at the 11:40 mark.
USF went back up by five, 24-19, but UDM tied it up again with five-straight points from Brown, the last three on a buzzing-beating 3-pointer. A few more ties would ensue – there were six in the first half – but the Titans did regain the lead with 2:26 left as McCalister drove the lane and laid it in to put the red, white and blue back in front, 31-30.
South Florida led by three at the break, 36-33, and scored the first basket in the second half for a five-point lead, but that was quickly trimmed away as sophomore
Audrey Matteson connected on a three-point play. From there, the Bulls started to control the game, opening a 13-point lead, 53-40, with 14:40 remaining.
That is when the Titans got right back into it with a 10-1 spurt and it was the young guards leading the way as McCalister had six points and a steal, while Reynolds added a basket and a steal in that run.
UDM found itself down by just four, 54-50, with the ball with 10:35 left, but Shayok was then called for a technical foul and USF raised its lead to eight points after that. A little more than a minute later, head coach Autumn Rademacher was called for a technical – her second of the game – and the Bulls pulled away with an 11-0 run of their own for a 65-50 lead and Detroit was just not able to recover.
Brown also had three steals to push her team leading number to 18 on the season, including 11 in the last five games.
Detroit will now get ready for Horizon League play as the Titans open the HL schedule with three road games, starting with a trip to Green Bay next Tuesday, Jan. 8. Game time is set for 8:00 p.m. (EST) at the Kress Events Center.
