LONG BEACH, Calif. (8/13/2012) -- With the official start of the women's soccer season just four days away, preseason polls are an early indication of what teams will be competitive throughout the season and the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer squad is right in the thick of it being picked 55th overall in the nation in TopDrawerSoccer.com's preseason poll and College Sports Madness announcing its preseason All-Conference awards.

TopDrawerSoccer.com announced its preseason poll of the top 64 teams in women's soccer in the nation and the Detroit Titans appeared at No. 55. The Titans were the only Horizon League team to appear in the poll.

College Sports Madness pegged Detroit with multiple honors for individual awards. Junior forward Abby McCollum was named the Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and head coach Mike Lupenec was tabbed the Preseason Coach of the Year, while six more Titans were included either on first or second All-Conference preseason honors. McCollum, Kaitlyn Quarrell, and Alyssa Riley were on the first team while Sarah Dzuris, Rebekah Dornbos, and Nora Abolins were all on the second team.

On Aug. 8, Detroit was selected to finish in a tie for first with four-time defending champion Milwaukee in the Horizon League Preseason Poll that saw voting from each of the team's coaches, with coaches not being allowed to vote for their own teams.

The Titans return their top five scorers from last season in McCollum, Quarrell, Riley, Dzuris, and Dornbos along with 12 newcomers who will try to push Detroit up to the top of the Horizon League and towards a conference championship.

In 2011, McCollum and Quarrell were both named to the All-Horizon League first team, Abolins was on the All-HL second team, while Riley was named to the All-Horizon League Newcomer Team. McCollum and Quarrell were named to the All-Horizon League second team as freshmen in 2010 and McCollum, Quarrell, and Abolins were all on the newcomer squad in their first season.

Last year, UDM finished with the third best record in the 20-year history of women's soccer at Detroit with a 12-6-2 overall mark, earning the No. 2 seed entering the Horizon League Tournament. That included a first round bye into the conference semifinal match where UDM has seen the last two seasons come to a close. Detroit was also ranked in the regional poll for the first time reaching the No. 9 spot in the Great Lakes Region for three weeks.
