Late Goal Spoils Titans' West Coast Opener

Box Score

IRVINE, Calif. (8/31/12) - The University of California Riverside scored late in the second half to defeat the UDM men's soccer team, 2-1, on Friday afternoon at Anteater Stadium.  Pat Lepera scored the only goal for the Titans as they began a West Coast swing.

Matt Ybarra received credit for an assist on Lepera's third goal of the season.

"We played well today," said Titan head coach Nicholas Deren, "I didn't have a problem with how we played but we didn't capitalize on our opportunities in the end."

Detroit came out aggressive accumulating four shots, a corner kick, and a yellow card in the first 11 minutes of action. In the 14th minute Titan netminder Nathan Steinwascher made a save off a header from a Highlander forward to keep the game scoreless. But Riverside did sneak on by Steinwascher in the 34th minute on the near post to take a 1-0 lead.

But the Titans stayed aggressive as Lepera answered back with a goal of his own 32 seconds later to tie the score 1-1. Ybarra played a deep cross to Lepera who sent in a two-hopper for his third goal of the season, which tied his total from last year.

Matt Harkema tallied a shot on goal in the 53rd minute, but Riverside answered back five-straight shots, until Lepera fired a ball high on goal in the 79th minute.

The Highlanders scored with less than five minutes left in the game to take a 2-1 lead, but the Titans didn't go down easy as Kevin Pinkos took a shot with 11 seconds to go, that beat the Highlanders netminder, but sailed high to keep the final score 2-1.

The Titans will face this weekends host school UC Irvine on Sunday at 7:30 p.m. (EST) at Anteater Stadium.
