Titans Open Horizon League Play With a Win Over Green Bay

Box Score
DETROIT (9/14/12) -- Adam Bedell scored his fourth goal in as many games as the Detroit Titans opened Horizon League play with a 2-1 victory over Green Bay, Friday at Titan Field.

“Our team had a good fighting spirit today,” head coach Nicholas Deren said, “We bottled things up at the midfield and our back line was tight.  Adam Bedell, Pat Lepera and Matt Harkema helped us play the way we have been playing in the second half and put some pressure on them.”

Green Bay came out of the blocks firing, getting four shots off in the opening minutes. They maintained control of the game for the first half outshooting Detroit 7-1, but goalkeeper Nathan Steinwascher saved four shots to keep the Phoenix scoreless in the first half.

After the half, Green Bay held the momentum and scored the first goal of the game off a header in the 48th minute, Detroit answered in the 50th minute when Bedell converted a penalty kick to tie the game at one.

UDM continued its assault with two more shots and then Bedell deflected a ball to Harkema whose shot went inside the far post to give the Titans a one-goal lead at the 57:49 mark. Detroit held Green Bay without a shot for the remainder of the game to capture its first Horizon League victory of the season.

This was the first time the Titans defeated Green Bay at home since 2004 and the first win over Green Bay since the 2005 season. With the home victory, it is also the first time the Titans have won their first two home games since 2006.

Detroit will be in action again when it travels to Bowling Green, Ohio to face the Falcons on Tuesday for a match at 7:00 p.m.
