DETROIT (9/30/2012) --
Nina Carter became the fourth Titan to score three goals this season putting home the game-winning tally in the 85th minute as the University of Detroit Mercy women's soccer team won a 1-0 decision over the Loyola Ramblers in Horizon League play Sunday afternoon at Titan Field.
The Detroit goal came off a corner kick from
Sarah Dzuris as the ball was played into the 18-yard box and a defensive attempt to clear the ball went right to Carter, whose shot dribbled in past the Loyola goalkeeper for the lone goal of the game at 84:51.
“It's a big win. I think the whole team knew it was a big win for us today and we worked hard,” said UDM goalkeeper coach
Mike Sheehy. “Everything didn't go our way, but the girls were able to fight through the adversity and put together a late goal to get us a win. We're happy for today, but tomorrow we get back to work and prepare for Valparaiso.”
The first half of play saw Loyola (6-5-1, 1-2 Horizon League) hold a 7-3 shot advantage with four of those Rambler attempts coming in the first 11 minutes of the game.
Detroit (5-5-1, 2-1 Horizon League) roared back with seven shots in the second half and kept Loyola from having any scoring opportunities as the Titans finished with a 10-7 overall shooting advantage.
Titan Goalkeeper
Nora Abolins needed to make two saves in recording her fifth shutout of the season and second in Horizon League matches.
“I think we have been building for a long time so I'm really glad we got the win,” said Abolins. “It's a big morale booster but we did a lot of good things and we have some things to work on, but overall we got the job done.”
Abolins now has 20 career shutouts in 46 games and is just three away from tying Detroit's all-time career high mark of 23 shared by both Alisson Dube and Katie Fortenberry.
The Titans will hit the road to continue their conference schedule as they will play at Valparaiso this Saturday with game time set for 5:00 p.m. (ET).
